Super Modified Star “Liquid” Lou Cicconi Headed to Devil’s Bowl
Will race as teammate to point leader Stone at Carrara Masonry Richards Memorial
WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil’s Bowl Speedway will welcome a new challenger on Friday, August 2 as short track auto racing star “Liquid” Lou Cicconi makes the long haul from his Aston, PA home to the racy Vermont track. The International Super Modified Association championship leader will race in the Carrara Masonry & Concrete “C.J. Richards Memorial 67” for the Northern Modified Challenge Series on Friday.
Cicconi is a multi-time champion and race winner on asphalt, concrete, and dirt surfaces in open-wheel Modified, Super Modified, Midget, and Three-Quarter Midget cars; his most recent victory came in a winged ISMA Super Modified at the famed Oswego (NY) Speedway in June. Cicconi has landed a potent Devil’s Bowl ride in the No. X1 car fielded by G. Stone Motorsports of Middlebury, VT – the same team that has won six Bond Auto Parts Modified races at the track with driver Todd Stone and ranks second in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national Rookie of the Year standings.
“I’ve only ever run a dirt-style Modified on asphalt once, but I liked it,” Cicconi said. “I’ll be driving a great car, and I think I can give the home track regulars a run for the win. I usually don’t show up at a race trying to finish second.”
Cicconi will be one of many top drivers trying to claim the Carrara Masonry & Concrete C.J. Richards Memorial 67. Eighteen-year-old Jessey Mueller of Olmstedville, N.Y., will carry the Northern Modified Challenge Series point lead into the event after winning the season opener at Thunder Road in Barre, VT in May. Veteran Leon Gonyo of Chazy, N.Y., rides second in the standings. Joining them will be Stone, Joe Williams, Hunter Bates, Vince Quenneville, Jr., Ron Proctor, Jeff Haskins, Joey Roberts, brothers Aaron and Adam Bartemy, and more.
The Devil’s Bowl Speedway Late Model division will also have a big night at the C.J. Richards Memorial with twin 20-lap feature races. Rookie Josh Masterson of Bristol, VT holds a 12-point lead on veteran Chris Bergeron of Claremont, NH; the Late Model class has not had a repeat winner through five regular events in 2013. The Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock division will also be in action, led by Jake Noble of Benson, VT, who has a slim eight-point cushion on Addison, VT rookie Chuck Bradford.
Regular general admission on Friday, August 2 is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and free for children 12 and under; racing begins at 7:00pm. Devil’s Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, VT, four miles north of Exit 2 on U.S. Route 4. Visit www.devilsbowlspeedwayvt.com or call (802) 265-3112 for more information.
