Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday 08/28 Results
Waterford, CT — End of summer racing continued Wednesday night at Waterford Speedbowl as another round of Wild ‘n Wacky racing hit the race track. Fans were treated to an action packed night, watching Angelo Belsito of Auburn, MA and Dave Yardley of Berlin each score repeat wins from a week ago in the INEX Legend Cars and Super X-Car features respectively. Brad Voglesong of Middletown rallied late to take the win in the X-Car division and Colchester’s Anthony Marvin won another INEX Bandolero feature. Roubert Goulet of Southington and Christopher Lee of Uncasville shared honors in the night’s Wacky race.
Voglesong dodged a mid-race incident and rallied to win the 25-lap X-Car feature. He passed Dave Gargaro Jr., who had led much of the race, with three laps remaining. Voglesong nearly lost several positions on the back chute early in the race when he encountered trouble while running among the top-five cars, however another car spun at the back of the pack to create a caution flag that saved him from losing the positions when the lap could not be completed. He maintained his position for the restart, then moved to second position by the time the race reached its final five laps. Gargaro, who was trying for his first ever win, ran a strong race, leading most of it by a healthy margin. He couldn’t shake Voglesong late however as Voglesong used the outside lane to pull even on lap-22, eventually taking the lead. Gargaro hung tough to Voglesong’s inside over the next two laps, finally surrending on the final lap. His great run ended up in second position and Zach Thomas was third. Voglesong is the division point leader, stretching his advantage over Thomas.
The 25-lap Super X-Car feature was a matter of survival for Yardley, as he endured a wild final six laps of the event to emerge with the race lead and ultimately, the win. Yardley started the race in eighteenth position and ran deep in the field with slim hopes of grabbing his second consecutive win the division before problems plagued many of the front runners over the final laps. Two separate incidents on lap-19 took out contenders R.J. Cunningham, Mike Maskell and Ray Reed as they battled for the lead. Those three had a great battle come to an end as each was involved in a skirmish on the track to open the door for Yardley. He restarted second outside of Bill Reiman on the third attempt to complete lap-19, taking the lead ahead of Reiman on the outside of the track. Yardley survived a final caution a lap later when Reiman’s car blew up on the track entering turn three, causing several cars to crash behind him. After the incident, Robert Goulet was able to finish second behind Yardley and Dan Butler ended up third.
In the 25-lap INEX Legend Cars feature, Belsito was able to score his second consecutive Wednesday victory with steady and consistent driving. Three caution flags slowed the race, the final coming on lap-14. Belsito had come through the top ten cars to advance to fourth position on lap-12. A lap later he moved to third just before the final yellow flag. Joey Ternullo had led since lap-6 and had T.J. Thompson to his outside for the restart. Ternullo resumed his lead but Belsito quickly challenged for second position, taking the spot on lap-15. Ternullo had a five car length lead over Belsito evaporate over the next five laps and Belsito was underneath him for the lead on lap-20. The two cars ran side-by-side for three laps before Belsito was able to wear down Ternullo after a clean duel at the front. He closed out the final laps to take the win while Ternullo, the Wednesday series point leader, wound up second. Mike Christopher Jr. recovered from a spin on the second lap, rallying to finish third on the leaders’ bumpers.
Marvin took the lead at the initial green flag of the 20-lap INEX Bandolero feature ahead of Andrew Morin and promptly marched out to a convincing lead. Marvin was on his game, pulling ahead before competitors could line up and make a challenge for the lead. Morin took second to position ahead of Jonathon Puleo, who had to make his way to third. The field ran clean through the checkered flag without incident with Marvin taking the win. He cut into point leader Corey Comeroski’s lead in the standings with just two events remaining on the season. Morin finished in second, Puleo was third and Comeroski placed fifth.
