John Peters Dominates at Wiscasset in New Ride

nelcarwis_1Wiscasset, ME — With just two races remaining in the 2013 Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour season, it’s a dead heat in the point’s battle between Ryan Hammar and Matt Bourgoine. Two points separate the two drivers and their battle is set to be one of the best title fights going to the final race at Oxford Plains Speedway. First though, they had to do battle at Wiscasset Speedway amongst the strong 19 car field on the fast 3/8th mile track.

nelcarwis_2In the first heat race, it was the 66 of Wally Silva in the pole with the 59 of Reid Lanpher, who won last time out at Wiscasset Speedway, on his outside. At the start, Lanpher got the quick jump and took the lead. Behind him though was the 2 of Ryan Hammar who had worked his way through the field from the seventh starting spot to challenge for the lead. At the finish of the heat, Hammar got by Lanpher for the win. Lanpher held on for second while Bourgoine rounded out the top three.

For heat race number two it was the 8 of Matt Chagnot on the pole with the 96 of Wyatt Alexander on his outside. The two drivers battled hard for the lead with Alexander getting the advantage and pulled away from the field early on. Bob Weymouth was hot on his tail though, as the four time champion closed in on the young 13 year old for the race lead. At the finish, Alexander was able to hold off Weymouth for his first heat win! John Peters driving the 88 owned by fellow competitor Pete Cannell finished in the third spot.

The 30 lap feature event was up next. Rain was threatening in the rain, giving an extra sense of urgency to the 19 car field before the start. It was the defending champion Bourgoine on the pole with Alexander on the outside as the field came to the green flag. Alexander was able to get the best of Bourgoine and take the lead. He would hold it early but the 88 of Peters who started fourth took the race lead on lap five. From that point on it was Peters and Bourgoine at the front pulling away from a mad rush behind them for position.

nelcarwis_3The best racing in the pack wasn’t just for the race lead however, as some of the Tour’s top drivers like Ryan Hammar, Shaun Buffington and Reid Lanpher worked their way from the rear of the field. It all added up to a great display of respect and talent by the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour drivers, as they put on a show for the great fans in Wiscasset. At the races finish, it was all John Peters having behind hounded by Bourgoine for much of the race, as he took his second win of the 2013 season! Bourgoine finished in second, while Alexander rounded out the podium. Shaun Buffington worked his way from the last spot to finish fourth with Alan Smith rounded out the top five.

nelcarwis_4After 13 races, only one race remains in three weeks at Oxford Plains Speedway. Matt Bourgoine now leads Ryan Hammar by 13 points going in to the final race of the season. Bourgoine will have to start from the rear of the field however at Oxford, as he finished in the top three at Wiscasset. It’s guaranteed to come down to the final lap at Oxford Plains, where the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour will be part of the Pro All Stars Series North finale on September 28th. Tickets are $20 for the final race of the season with racing starting at 1PM!
