2013 World Series this Weekend at Thompson
THOMPSON, CT — The weekend that every race fan in the northeast looks forward to is this weekend at the Thompson International Speedway. The Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing presented by Xtra Mart kicks off this coming Friday and runs through Sunday.
Fifteen different divisions of race cars and trucks will converge on the historic speedway to draw down the curtain on the 2013 racing season. The World Series of Speedway Racing is three days of non-stop activity on the race track and hours of fun and social activities for the fans. The entire weekend is a huge race and party gathering as fans say good bye to another year of auto racing.
The race track is the center of activity with hundreds of race cars and trucks and many race teams with hopes of capturing a championship in their respective divisions. The most talked about championship battle surrounds the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Two drivers are positioned to capture the 2013 title during the last race of the year for the most popular NASCAR touring division in the northeast. Ryan Preece and defending champ, Doug Coby are in a tight points battle for the crown. Preece holds a 26- point advantage over Coby. One of these drivers appears destined to end their weekend as the new NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion. Should Preece emerge with the title, he will be the youngest driver in the history of the Tour to capture the crown. Race fans will also be treated to an autograph session with the WMT drivers on Sunday afternoon.
Other championships on the line include the ISMA Super modified title, the NEMA Midgets, Granite State Pro Stocks and the Valenti Modified Racing Series. The World Series will also feature champions in the New England Truck Series and the Pro 4 Modifieds. Autograph sessions will also be held for the Valenti Modifieds on Saturday and the Granite State Pro Stocks on Sunday
The nine divisions that practice and qualify on Friday will race in their feature events on Saturday night. Those qualifying on Saturday afternoon will compete in their main events on Sunday. The only exception to that is the Valenti Modified Racing Series. This division will qualify and race on Saturday.
Hundreds of fans make Thompson their home for the weekend as campers of all sizes and descriptions fill every available area set aside for camping. The track does, however, require that all units be self-contained. Every year fans kick off the racing season with a celebration at Thompson’s Icebreaker weekend and they close out the season with another celebration at the World Series. The Raceway Club House is open for the weekend serving great food and drink including a huge breakfast buffet on Saturday and Sunday morning and dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings. Full menus are on the Speedway’s web page. Fans who find time to break away from the on-track action can enjoy a round or two on Thompson’s championship 18-hole golf course or practice their swings on the driving range.
Grandstand open at 12 Noon on Friday and at 9 AM on both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for the Sunoco World Series presented Xtra Mart are available in advance from the Thompson track office. (860)-923-2280. All major credit cards are accepted The entire weekend’s racing schedule along with interesting articles about this racing spectacle are available at www.thompsonspeedwayoval.com.
