2014 Southern Modified Schedule Announced

Fifteen Race Schedule Covers Seven Traditional Tracks

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 2014 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour schedule has a pair of special non-points events on the slate this season to go along with its traditional calendar and some notable additions.

The Whelen Southern Modified Tour’s 10th season of competition will see 15 championship points events scattered throughout the tour’s familiar southeastern footprint. Added to the season-opening non-points UNOH Battle At The Beach at Daytona International Speedway is another special event folded into the June Whelen Modified Tour visit to New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Also new this year is second dates added to Virginia short tracks – Langley Speedway and South Boston Speedway.

When the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour makes its summer visit to New Hampshire, the points race on Saturday, July 12, will be preceded by a unique, invitation-only 25-lap shootout the day before that includes the Southern Tour. The race will feature a limited field and is only open to past NASCAR Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified Tour champions and race winners, along with 2013 Sunoco Rookies of the Year for both tours.

“The expanded 2014 calendar gives the passionate Modified fans additional opportunities to enjoy the stars, cars and high-speed excitement of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour at some of the most historic tracks in all of NASCAR,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series.

The 2014 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour schedule rundown:

Daytona International Speedway – The season will get underway on Feb. 18 with a non-championship race for the second straight season on the short-track oval at the “World Center of Racing as part of the UNOH Battle At The Beach.

Caraway Speedway – The unofficial home track of the Southern Modified Tour has six dates throughout the season including the season opener on March 9.

Southern National Motorsports Park – After a successful return to the slate a season ago, the Kenly, N.C., track again has two races – March 15 and Sept. 20.

South Boston Speedway – Like Langley, the legendary Virginia short track will host a pair of tour dates on April 5 and Sept. 13.

Langley Speedway – Two dates – April 12 and Aug. 30 – are on tap this season at the racy Virginia oval.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway – In another combination event with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, select Southern Tour competitors will compete alongside their brethren in the Whelen Modified Tour on July 11 in a special non-points event.

Bowman Gray Stadium – The historic quarter-mile date on Aug. 2 is always a season highlight.

Bristol Motor Speedway – The World’s Fastest Half Mile again hosts the Whelen Modified-Whelen Southern Modified Tour combination event at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway as part of a doubleheader with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Aug. 20.

Charlotte Motor Speedway – The tour will share a stage with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Oct. 9 for the season finale as the Modifieds will tackle the quarter-mile oval situated on the frontstretch of the Concord, N.C., facility.

Earlier this year at Charlotte Motor Speedway, George Brunnhoelzl III captured his third straight NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship and fourth in five seasons. He, along with the six other NASCAR touring series champions and special award winners, will be honored at the NASCAR Night of Champions Awards on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Charlotte (N.C.)
