PRACTICE: Coby Quick at Daytona
Led Both Whelen Modified Practices In New Ride
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A change in teams has done little to slow Doug Coby’s momentum he led both practice sessions Tuesday for the NASCAR Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified Tours in the UNOH Battle At The Beach on the short track at Daytona International Speedway.
Coby, from Milford, Conn., posted a fast lap of 76.905 mph in the final session to lead all drivers throughout the day. The 2012 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion also turned in the morning session’s fastest lap at 75.203 mph.
The UNOH Battle At The Beach marks the first event for Coby in the No. 2 Dunleavy’s Truck & Trailer Repair Ford after he left Darling Racing in the offseason for Mike Smeriglio III Racing. He finished fourth at Daytona last year with Darling.
2013 UNOH Battle At The Beach runner-up Eric Goodale was also second on both practice boards on Tuesday. He posted a fast lap of 75.114 mph in the first session and 76.901 in the second.
Reigning Whelen Modified Tour titlist Ryan Preece, Cole Powell and Donny Lia rounded out the top five in the first practice while Preece, Kyle Benjamin and Lia completed the second practice top five.
Two-lap qualifying is scheduled for a 4:45 p.m. ET start and the UNOH Battle at the Beach is set to get underway at 7 p.m. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will follow the Whelen Modified Tour and Whelen Southern Modified Tour at approximately 8:45 p.m.
NASCARHomeTracks.com will provide a live video stream of the qualifying.
Live race coverage on FOX Sports 2 will begin at 7 p.m. while radio coverage on the Motor Racing Network with live streaming MRN.com and SiriusXM NASCAR Ch. 90 gets underway at 6:45 p.m.
