Whelen So. Mod Tour News & Notes: Langley

Seuss Goes For A Spring Sweep In Virginia

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Andy Seuss will look to continue his sizzling start to the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season with a sweep of the spring races in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Seuss earned a decisive victory last week at South Boston Speedway, and he hopes to continue his Old Dominion State dominance as the tour rolls on to Langley Speedway for Saturday’s Courtyard by Marriott/Pepsi 150.

A second-straight win would also mean another milestone for the New Hampshire native. Seuss became the Whelen Southern Modified Tour’s first multi-time winner at South Boston last Saturday, a feat he could match this week at Langley. Seuss was previously triumphant at the .396-mile oval in 2011.

Seuss has unquestionably been the southern tour’s hottest racer since last fall. Starting at Caraway Speedway on Sept. 8, 2013, he has won five of the last seven races, including two of three in 2014.

EVENT SCHEDULE & ENTRY LIST

Fast Facts
The Race:
The Courtyard by Marriott/Pepsi 150 will be the fifth all-time race for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour at Langley Speedway, and the first of two there in 2014.

The Procedure:  The maximum starting field is 26 cars, including provisionals. The first 23 cars will qualify through two-lap time trials. The remaining three spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race is scheduled for 150 laps (59.40 miles) with a 10-minute break at or near the conclusion of Lap 75.

The Track:  Langley is a .396-mile slightly-banked asphalt oval located in Hampton, Va. The facility features NASCAR Whelen All-American Series-sanctioned events on Saturday nights throughout the racing season, headlined by the late model division.

Race Winners:  Each of the previous four events at Langley has produced a different winner. Tim Brown won the tour’s inaugural race there on Sept. 4, 2010.

Pole Winners:  There have been different pole winners in each of the previous four events. Andy Seuss holds the NWSMT track qualifying record at 14.711 seconds and 96.513 mph, set on Aug. 31, 2013.

Langley Race Notes
Preece Headed South:
The Courtyard by Marriott/Pepsi 150 will be the first of two scheduled NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour appearances in 2014 for reigning NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Ryan Preece. In three southern tour races a year ago the NASCAR Next driver triumphed at Bowman Gray Stadium, contended for wins at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Southern National Motorsports Park, and earned the Coors Light Pole Award for all three. Preece has four top-five finishes in six career southern tour starts.

Bertuccio Stays Strong:  A surprise winner in the second race of the season at Southern National, JR Bertuccio is starting to prove that he can be a championship contender in 2014. The native Long Islander carried an average career finish of 13th at South Boston Speedway into last week’s South Boston 150, but he posted a third-consecutive top five to remain a close second in points to leader Andy Seuss.

Home State Swing Continues for Stinson, Winstead:  With the Whelen Southern Modified Tour in the middle of three-straight weeks of racing, Virginia drivers Thomas Stinson and A.J. Winstead have to be happy that the first two of those events will be held in their native Virginia. Ten of the tour’s 15 points races take place in North Carolina, but this year Virginia has four dates between South Boston and Langley. Perhaps a little less tow time will benefit both Virginians this week. Stinson, who hails from Chester, and Winstead from Bon Air, both crashed out last week at South Boston.

Check `Em Out on the Web:  For the second week in a row, the Whelen Southern Modified Tour will receive coverage via FansChoice.tv. Langley has hooked up with the video service to stream all of its NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action this year, and the cameras will keep rolling for the modifieds Saturday night. Although practice and qualifying will be streamed live, the Courtyard by Marriott/Pepsi 150 will be shown on a tape-delayed basis following the conclusion of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series FOX broadcast from Darlington Raceway on Saturday night.

Home Tracks:  Langley
The 2014 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season got underway at Langley Speedway last Saturday night as two-time track titlist Greg Edwards took the checkered flag in the headlining late model division. CE Falk III is the defending track champion, and has captured the Langley late model crown in four of the previous five seasons. The late models will have a night off this Saturday, but the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will be joined on the race card by five weekly divisions.

Last Time Out:  South Boston
The third race of the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season took place on Saturday, April 5 at South Boston Speedway. Here are some highlights from the South Boston 150:

• Andy Seuss led all but one lap as he recorded a second win in three races this season, and in the process became the first multi-time race winner in tour history at South Boston.
• George Brunnhoelzl III extended his podium streak to eight races when he crossed the line second behind Seuss. Both of Seuss’ wins this year have seen Brunnhoelzl finish as the runner-up.
• Danny Bohn earned the second Coors Light Pole Award of his career.

Next Time Out:  Caraway
The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will next head to Caraway Speedway on Easter weekend for the Bunny Hop 150 on Saturday, April 19. It will be the second of six scheduled trips to the Sophia, N.C., oval in 2014. George Brunnhoelzl III won this race from the pole a year ago while Andy Seuss was victorious in the tour’s first 2014 stop at Caraway in March.
