Stafford Motor Speedway Champions for Charities Driver Spotlight: Ted Christopher

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway is hosting a field of accomplished current and former championship drivers for this year’s 4th annual Champions for Charities event, which will take place on Friday, June 27th.  In the upcoming weeks before the event, Stafford Speedway is providing a profile on each of the championship drivers.  This week, the spotlight is on Ted Christopher, 7-time Stafford SK Modified® Champion, and the 2008 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion. Christopher will be racing for Racing Against Cancer.

Christopher previously raced in the Champions for Charities event in 2011 for the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative and last year for Racing Against Cancer and it was through a friend of his wife’s that drew him to continue to raise money for cancer research.

“My wife worked with someone that had breast cancer and cancer is something that affects a lot of people so hopefully we can at least help someone who has cancer,” said Christopher.  “I’ve known a lot of people who have had cancer, so it’s a great cause to raise money for.”

A big part of Christopher’s fundraising effort will be at Stafford Motor Speedway the day after the Champions for Charities race.  The speedway will host a Racing Against Cancer Track Walk on Saturday June 28th.  Registration begins at 9:00am and the walk will take place from 10:30am-12:30pm.

All funds raised from the track walk will be credited towards Christopher’s fundraising total for the Champions for Charities event.  Race fans can register for the track walk by going online to the Stafford Champions For Charities page found on www.staffordspeedway.com and clicking on the Racing Against Cancer logo.  Or registration and donations can be completed online at www.racingagainstcancer.org/events/stafford-speedway-track-walk. R.A.C. will also be present with a midway display at the Friday June 20th race event for registration.

“The track walk is a great event and I can’t believe how much money it raised last year,” said Christopher.  “It was a huge amount of money and obviously everyone supports it and hopefully we can raise as much or more than we raised last year.”

Christopher is looking forward to the opportunity to compete again in this year’s event, after raising the 3rd highest amount, totaling $4,113, for Racing Against Cancer.  Christopher finished 8th in his first Champions for Charities start in 2011 and he finished 4th last season after battling for the lead for much of the 15-lap race.

“Last year was pretty good, but it all depends on whose car you get in,” said Christopher.  “Racing is always fun when you’re competitive so hopefully we can get a good kart.  Depending on what kart I get for the race we’ll see how good my chances will be to win but the race is a lot of fun and we’re raising money for a great cause.”

Racing Against Cancer is a non-profit organization dedicated to the raising of funds for cancer research, patient services, youth tobacco educational programs, and awareness.  Through the efforts of many generous and talented racing teams and organizations, the Racing Against Cancer program has generated in excess of $680,000 for the fight against cancer.  Funds are predominantly raised through Track Walks at local short tracks.  Racing Against Cancer strives to raise additional funds for benefactors that provide cancer research and patient services, provide an avenue for funding Racing Against Cancer’s planned Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, increase awareness of Racing Against Cancer being a leading Racing Charity, andshow the world that racers, race teams, racing families, and racetracks are all a caring part of the community.
