Fan Voting Continues for the NAPA SK 5K at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — Summer has arrived and the NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K, $5,000 to win SK Modified race on July 4th is quickly approaching.  Fans have been weighing in at staffordspeedway.com since late March on how the race format will be set.  Over 2,200 votes have been cast since voting has begun.   The current category leaders are time trials and heats for qualifying procedure, no tire changes allowed during the race, a top 12 invert to set the starting grid, and a race distance of 100 laps.

Fans need to remember that setting the race distance will have a twist that will leave drivers and crew chiefs alike ready to gamble on strategy.  Laps will be chosen when cars are on track before the race is set to begin.  The top three lap counts in the fan voting will be placed into a hat and selected at random while the cars are on track before the race.

“I’ve seen the vote on the website and it’s pretty cool to have the fans voting on the race format,” said SK Modified® driver Rowan Pennink.  “It’s awesome to get the fans involved and hopefully it will help bring more fans out to the track to see the big race at Stafford.  I’m excited about the race and it should be a really great event.  We could definitely use a win that night with the 99 car because we’ve had some rough luck this year.  With all the rainouts and our bad luck this season, it would be awesome if we could win the SK 5K race and keep our season rolling.”

The SK Modified division is home to one of the deepest racing divisions in the country.  2 past national champions, 3 Whelen Modified Tour past champions, 1 Modified Racing Series past champion, an impressive group of SK Light graduates, and at least 9 regulars on the Whelen Modified Tour or Modified Racing Series call the weekly Stafford paddock home.  In addition the NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k will see at least one additional celebrated driver as former SK Modified competitor, Whelen Modified Tour Champion, and current Modified Racing Series points leader Todd Szegedy has announced that he will compete in the July 4th big money race.   Todd is just the first of an expected contingent of drivers looking to come to Stafford and try to steal some of the payday from the regulars.

“I’m sure you’re going to see a lot of guys from other tracks come to Stafford to try to win some of that money” explains Woody Pitkat, defending SK Modified champion. “You’ll see some guys from Waterford and Thompson as well as some other guys like Matt Hirschman show up that night”.

Stafford’s marquee division is the SK Modifieds® and on July 4th they will have their chance to shine bright.  Please go to www.staffordspeedway.com and select the SK 5K logo on the homepage to cast your vote.  Remember every vote matters, especially when it comes to lap counts.  Anyone of the top three amounts could be selected, it could be 100 or it could be 50.  The only factor we all know is that the race will be high stakes; $5,000 to win, the biggest payday in SK Modified history.

The $5,000 to win SK 5K won’t be the only entertainment at Stafford during the night of July 4th.  Stafford Speedway will host Mean Gene and the Flamethrowers, a concert style party rock band that is based out of Long Island, NY.  Mean Gene and the Flamethrowers will play both prior to and after the conclusion of the NAPA SK 5K racing program.  Along with the band, in true Fourth of July style, Stafford Speedway will have a barbeque taking place on the midway with some great food available to race fans.

Tickets for the July 4th NAPA SK 5K are available and on sale now at the Speedway Box Office.  Tickets are priced at $27.50 for adult general admission tickets, $5.00 for kids ages 6-14, and kids 5 and under are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult.  Reserved seating will be priced at $30.00 for all ages.  All ticket prices include 10% CT Admission Tax.  Stafford Speedway offers free parking with free overnight parking for self-contained RV’s available.
