Analyzing The Hoosier Tire 200 At Riverhead Raceway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will return to action with the Hoosier Tire 200 on Saturday at Riverhead Raceway on New York’s Long Island. Below is a statistical look at the performance of tour and selected drivers at the track:

Hoosier Tire 200 Setup:
• Season points leader Justin Bonsignore earned his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory at Riverhead Raceway in 2011, the same season he also captured the track’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series title.
• Ryan Preece has won four of his eight career NWMT starts at Riverhead, including the last three races in a row. The defending tour titlist will look at the Hoosier Tire 200 as an opportunity to gain his first win of 2014.
• In addition to Bonsignore, Donny Lia and Rowan Pennink also earned their first career victories at Riverhead. Lia is tied with Preece for the most wins among active drivers at the quarter-mile with four.

At Riverhead Raceway:
History
• Opened in 1951 as a dirt track and converted to asphalt in 1955.
• Held its first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race on July 10, 1985 during the NWMT’s first season. The inaugural race was won by Jimmy Spencer.
• Has held 53 NWMT races all-time, fourth-most among all venues.
• Is one of two tracks to play host to the NWMT in each of its now 30 seasons of competition, along with Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.

Notebook
• At .25 miles, Riverhead is the smallest track on the schedule along with Monadnock Speedway.
• This marks the second year in a row that Riverhead will welcome the NWMT twice in the same season. There will be multiple races in a season at Riverhead in 22 of 30 seasons of the tour.
• There have been four NWMT races that have been won by Riverhead NASCAR Whelen All-American Series drivers. The last of which was Ed Brunnhoelzl Jr. in 1995.
• Mike Ewanitsko experienced more success than any other NWMT driver at Riverhead during his days as a competitor. His 11 wins and eight poles lead in both categories.
• Donny Lia and Ryan Preece the active wins leaders at Riverhead with four apiece while Ted Christopher and Preece have the most poles among current competitors with two.

• This will be his first NWMT appearance of 2014.
• In 43 career bullring races he’s recorded four wins, two poles, 26 top 10s and an average finish of 10.8.
• Has six top 10s, an average finish of 13th and a best result of second (2011) in 14 career Riverhead races.

Up To Speed:
• The 2014 season is the 30th for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.
• The 2014 schedule features 14 races at seven different tracks across four states.
• The competition season opened with the non-points UNOH Battle At The Beach on the short track at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 18. Ryan Preece was the polesitter and Doug Coby took the checkered flag.
• Justin Bonsignore passed first-time pole winner Woody Pitkat with nine laps to go to win the points season opener at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on April 6.
• Rookie Tommy Barrett Jr. captured his first pole and Bobby Santos earned his sixth Stafford Motor Speedway victory on April 27.
• After two rainouts, the third race of the season finally got in the books on June 6 when Doug Coby took the checkered flag at Stafford. Santos earned the pole on the original May 23 race date.
• The first bullring race of the year saw a battle between polesitter Donny Lia and Bobby Santos on June 21 at Waterford Speedbowl, and Santos eventually won out for his 12th career victory.
• Following this week’s Hoosier Tire 200, the NWMT will return to action on Friday, July 11 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the non-points Whelen All-Star Shootout invitational event. The New Hampshire 100 will follow on Saturday, July 12.
