QUALIFYING: Beatty Takes Top Spot
Earns First Whelen Modified Coors Light Pole At Riverhead
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — John Beatty Jr. earned his first Coors Light Pole Award Saturday in just his fifth NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour start.
The 38-year-old from Merrick, New York, posted a lap of 11.959 seconds (75.257 mph) around the quarter-mile in qualifying for Saturday night’s Hoosier Tire 200.
Beatty ran the Whelen Modified Tour race twice at Riverhead last year, qualifying in the top five both times, and finished third at his home track in the June race.

He edged Ron Silk (11.978/75.138) and Shawn Solomito (12.005/74.969) for the top spot.
Ted Christopher was fourth and Tom Rogers Jr. fifth.
Eric Goodale, Timmy Solomito, Doug Coby, Patrick Emerling and Matt Hirschman rounded out the top 10. Defending tour champion Ryan Preece, who has won the last three Whelen Modified races at Riverhead, will start 21st.
The Hoosier Tire 200 will go green at 8 p.m.
