Don Shepherd Passes at 80
DON SHEPHERD, 80
Don Shepherd, one of USAC’s top sprint car mechanics during the highly-competitive 1960s, passed away Friday in Brownsburg, Ind. In 1965 he engineered a USAC Sprint Car owner’s championship for Jack Colvin. In addition to Indianapolis 500 winners Johnny Rutherford and Bobby and Al Unser, Shepherd also worked with drivers Jim Hurtubise, Jud Larson, Roger McCluskey, Bob Wente, Johnny Parsons, Gordon Woolley, Rick Muther, Buzz Rose and Don’s brother A.J. In 2010 Don was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa. USAC extends its condolences to his family and friends.
