Porter Moving to Street Stocks

Jon Porter of East Lyme, CT will be moving to the Street Stocks at New London-Waterford (CT) Speedbowl full-time in Don Spence’s No. 38. The reigning Saturday Showdown Series Super-X champion will be driving Mike Ferguson’s No. 4 Limited Sportsman at Thompson (CT) Speedway Motorsports Park, with a potential full schedule pending sponsorship.

“TLB Auto Machine made this all happen with the ride at Waterford, bunch of great guys that are giving me a shot,” Porter said.

A Rookie of the Year contender at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track, Porter’s goals are “(to) learn new things, keep the car in one piece. It’s a whole new game running with the big boys.”

Porter is content with his place in the Super X-Cars. According to SpeedbowlHistory.com, Porter has 23 wins since 2007, placing him second to John Yagmin in the division. “It dont matter. I’ll take a top three any day.”

“The car in the beginning of the year was perfect. I love to race hard, side by side, rubbin into each other without wreckin’ and puttin’ on a show is what it’s all about.”

Porter wanted to race since his grandfather took him to the Speedbowl a few times as a “young kid.” No one had the time to help him get started when he turned 16. He started racing nine years ago in the Super X-Cars and has made a home there since.

‘The Doctor’ owes his nickname to veteran announcer Matt Buckler, famous for giving monickers to drivers.

Porter is seeking sponsorship for his new venture. Contact him directly through Facebook or
