K-Man’s the Man at Beech Ridge

Sat, May 2, 2015 — Kevin (K-Man) Hutchens, the young gun from Waterboro, Maine, battled for the lead with DJ Moniz at the start and then was never headed as he cruised to victory in the 20 lap feature. A restart with 5 to go put PJ Stergios on the outside pole next to K-Man but PJ couldn’t hang with him, and settled for 2nd.

“He was really fast today. I couldn’t keep up” said Stergios. DJ Moniz scored his second straight podium finish in 3rd. Christian Briggs drove a strong race and took 4th. Richie Morrocco was 5th, Andy Barrows 6th, John Townsend 7th, Dr Jim Cataldo 8th, and Juris Kupris 9th, having had to pull off with driveline troubles.

The competition is level is very high in the new series, with any of 7 drivers able to take the checkers. It was a matter of who had the best setup, as they are all good drivers. The 2 rookies, John Townsend and Jim Cataldo are quickly learning, and will also soon be in contention.

The Wicked Cool Midgets were a real crowd pleaser. Many fans were surprised that they were the fastest cars at the track by far, getting around in 14.3 sec. With 180HP and only 1200lbs with the driver these cars can really hook up. There are several more of these midgets out there that will be joining us soon and fields of 15 to 20 cars will make some of the best racing around.

I want to thank Tom Mayberry and Andy Cusak for letting us race with them. Oxford and Beech Ridge are 2 quality tracks, and the PASS Tour has become one of the premier series in the northeast. Join us at Star Speedway on Saturday, May 23 for our next race on the tight quarter mile track, which has always been the home of the mighty midgets.

The Wicked Cool Midgets are keeping the tradition of midget racing alive. We’re honoring that tradition and creating something new. We know that we are standing on the shoulders of all the great midget drivers who made this sport, and we don’t take this responsibility lightly. See you at Star!
