Sussex Snares SCP Salute to Indy Opener
PEORIA, Ariz. (May 23, 2015) – Tempe’s Stevie Sussex picked up a hard-fought win by topping the USAC Southwest Sprint Car portion of Saturday night’s opening leg of Canyon Speedway Park’s Fourth Annual Salute to Indy event.
While Sussex took Sprint Car honors, other Saturday night winners included Chris McCurdy, Jr., in Arizona Differential Pure Stocks, Jason Crowe in Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Renegades, Gary Winter in Micro Sprints and John Priest in AMA Mod Lites.
Starting from the front row outside, Sussex fought off Josh Pelkey and current USAC Southwest Sprint Car points leader R.J. Johnson for his second overall win of the year and first at CSP in 2015.
While Sussex took the checkered flag, Johnson rallied from 13th and fell just one position short of a third consecutive series score at CSP by finishing second. Pelkey rounded out the podium with Chris Bonneau and Bruce St. James rounding out the top five.
In Arizona Differential Pure Stock action, Chris McCurdy, Jr., raced from the seventh starting position to snare his third win of the year ahead of Bo Partain, Matt Martinez, Steve Bitting and Zack Madrid.
Jason Crowe raced from tenth to capture his first Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Renegade feature win of the year in front of Joe Peterson, Chuck Thornton, Greg Gillum and David Harrington.
Gary Winter raced from eight to capture his first Micro Sprint win since a pair of Winter Challenge triumphs, taking the checkered flag ahead of Paul Martin and Kyle Shipley. John Priest was a first time winner in AMA Mod Lite action by crossing the stripe ahead of 12th-starter Tyler Merrill and Austin Kuehl.
Night two of the Fourth Annual Salute to Indy at Canyon Speedway Park gets under way at 7:00 p.m. Sunday with another full slate of USAC Southwest Sprint Cars along with Micro Sprints, Arizona Differential Pure Stocks, Scottsdale & Muffler Automotive Renegades and AMA Mod Lites.
