Super Cup Stock Car Series Competitors Set to Tackle Challenging Columbus
Skyland, North Carolina (June 8, 2015) – After an exciting and eventful season opener the Super Cup Stock Car Series is prepared for more of the same as the teams enter the state of Ohio for their sixth appearance at Columbus Motor Speedway.
Dan Bainey, who won in his second career start last month at CNB Bank Raceway Park (PA), has never driven at the 1/3-mile track that resembles a circle more than a standard oval. As a result of his victory he enters the 2015 running of the Performance Fiberglass Products 75 presented by CoolShirt as the point leader.
“That’s pretty cool to say,” Bainey remarked regarding being up top in the standings after his win at CNB. “I have never driven for points, so I am really excited to get going in the season. We left (CNB) with the car in one shape, minor things I’m sure before we get to Columbus. We will see what we can do there.”
The driver that led the most laps and as a result acquired the most bonus points last time out was Brent Nelson, the winner in 2014 when the series visited Columbus. Things will be different in 2015, some planned but another being unexpected leading up to the race.
“Doing routine maintenance I checked the valve lash and found the rocker arm was busted and the bearing had gone out of the shaft rockers,” Nelson explained.
Not to worry as Nelson will bring out his backup car, the same machine in which he previously ran in the series.
“I redid the backup car over the winter as well, so I thought what better time to bring that old thing out and see what she can do,” Nelson said. “It might be for our benefit.”
In addition, drivers will continue having to become acclimated with a different tire on a completely disparate track.
“Tires are going to be very important at Columbus,” Nelson mentioned. “They have so much more grip than what we are accustomed to. It could play a big role.”
In last year’s 75 lap event, Nelson and eventual season champion JJ Pack waged a phenomenal battle for the top spot as the number of circuits remaining continued to dwindle. This year could prove even more competitive after the second groove in the corners received a fresh coat of high-polymer asphalt as part of off-season facility upgrades.
“It should open it up for some good exciting racing,” Nelson said. “We’re the reigning champion at Columbus so we’re going to go back and try to get another one.”
Pack, Bainey as well as other CNB top five finishers Harvey and Brian Harrison look to stop Nelson and achieve their first victories at Columbus. In addition, drivers such as Kevin Kromer hope to shake off a slow start to the season and quickly get back into contention.
