Smith on Top of Southern Super Series at Halfway Mark
Consistent Start Has Texas Driver Eyeing Series Championship
Pensacola, FL — The crossed flags are out and the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco 2015 campaign is halfway over. At top the top of the point standings sits a model of consistency as Austin, Texas driver Casey Smith is halfway to achieving one of his 2015 goals: A Championship.
“To me winning a championship would be like winning the Snowball Derby,” said Smith. “You look at all the guys who race in this series and you realize how tough it is. If you have an off night you are talking about a ninth or 10th place finish. That’s why winning and running well means so much.”
Smith has finished all seven races in the top-10 and only two of those finishes have been outside the top five. That includes his first ever Southern Super Series win at Mobile International Speedway (AL) in April.
More recently, in the SSS event at Watermelon Capital Speedway (GA), Smith was able to take a negative and turn it into a positive heading into this weekend’s event at Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL).
“We really bottomed out in qualifying at Cordele,” explained Smith. “I had a good feeling about that race and then we got spun and we were able to come back and finish ninth. I know we can take a lot from that track and use it for Montgomery for this week and the Alabama 200.”
Smith posted a third-place finish one year ago at Montgomery in one of the 125-lap events. He did not run the Alabama 200, which is one of the few remaining extra distance events of the season.
“If we keep up our finishes then we know we are doing our part,” said Smith. “We need to get as many points as we can in qualifying and keep up the in-race performance.”
A touring championship would be huge for Smith, who has only ever won titles in weekly divisions at tracks like South Alabama, Mobile and Central Texas.
“I know we can run strong at every track we go with Five Flags really being the only real wild card,” added Smith. “We just need to take it one day at a time.”
If Smith wins the championship it will lock him into the Snowball Derby a race he has led in three different years for a total of 182 laps. He was third in 2003 and he hopes to be on top like he is so far in the Southern Super Series.
