LFR Driver Development Group Secures Two Top-5 Finishes During CARS Tour Food Country USA 250
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 14, 2015) – The LFR Driver Development Group had a tremendous showing at the most recent Super Late Model CARS Tour event. William Byron and Joey Mucciacciaro secured two Top-5 finishes for the team while Quin Houff rounded out the group with a Top-15 at Motor Mile Speedway this past Saturday.
“All three of our drivers did a great job this weekend. It was a tough race, but they fought as hard as they could to grab every position possible. This weekend not only says a lot about the LFR Driver Development Group’s level of talent, but also how far the program has come,” said Rob Fuller, team owner. “I met with the officiating group and owners of the CARS Tour following the race to discuss the restart procedures that have caused havoc all season long. They were very receptive which was great. Hopefully, they will be proactive and make a change to better their series and let every team and driver know they are wanting to address issues when they arise.”
William Byron had the dominant car of the race, taking the lead just before Lap 50. He maintained control of the race until he received contact from a competitor while trying to keep the lead on a restart with just over 25 laps to go. The contact, which pushed in Byron’s right front fender, prevented him from capturing the win despite a great last lap charge. The current NASCAR K&N Pro Series East points leader came home with a second-place finish instead.
“Tonight we had another great race to build on with LFR Chassis. We ultimately want to compete for wins every time we show up at the track so it is awesome to have another dominant run like we did,” said Byron. “With that being said, we all wanted the win but we know if we continue to put ourselves in position like tonight, we will get many more victories with the Liberty University Chevy.”
Joey Mucciacciaro also had a solid showing Saturday night, when he finished the race in fifth place after driving up through the field. Mucciacciaro started towards the back of the pack in 24th place, but was up in the Top-10 by about Lap 60. From there it was just a matter of maintaining the car’s equipment while also keeping up with the leaders.
“This was a great weekend for the team. Tony Eury Jr. and Tony Eury Sr. did an excellent job on finding speed and setting me up to score a career-best finish in the CARS Tour,” said Mucciacciaro. “I learned a lot this weekend thanks to all the advice they gave me. We are definitely building some momentum here.”
“The Motor Mile Speedway is a beautiful facility. It’s a great track and I had a lot of fun,” he said. “I really enjoyed the fact that there were two lanes that worked on the race track. It made it easier for us to be able to drive up through the field. It was so smooth that I didn’t even realize how many cars I had passed until Tony Jr. told me!”
Mucciacciaro said that while he has experience driving up through the field, it’s definitely something he wants to work on avoiding.
“We knew we had a fast car in the long runs, so we weren’t too concerned about starting from the back. It’s still stressful though. You don’t want to get caught up in someone else’s mess,” said Mucciacciaro. “We managed it well though. You always have to be careful with pushing your stuff to make it up through the field and still saving a little bit to have at the end. Qualifying something I’ll want to work on before the next race.”
Quin Houff rounded out the LFR Driver Development Group lineup with a 15th place finish at his home track. Houff was fast from the start of the weekend and qualified on the outside pole for the main event. Unfortunately, his shot at the win got cut short when a competitor cut his tire down on Lap 3. Houff was forced to pit to repair the damage and fell a couple laps down. Despite the setback, Houff got back out on the track, determined to prove he had the best car out there.
“The team and I had another strong weekend. Even with having the tire cut down, we were the best car out there,” said Houff. “After the race we looked at the lap times and we still had the entire field beat. I was really hoping to win at my home track, but we just were a part of one of those racing deals.”
“The hardest part of the whole weekend was not flying up through the field when we got back on the track. I knew we had the car to do it, but I had to do the right thing and give the guys who were racing for position room,” he said. “It was hard to do that, especially while being at a place like the Motor Mile, where there’s so much grip. You can really duke it out with people there and race them as hard as you want to.”
Regardless of the finish this weekend, Houff had nothing but praise for his LFR team.
“It’s been going really well this season. We’ve found a lot of success so far and I’m looking to build on it. Next thing I want to focus is qualifying. It’d be cool to win a couple of poles before the year is up!”
