Terry Wins Second Career Renegade 100 at Airborne Park Speedway

Durgan repeats in Modifieds; Clark tops Mini-Mods; Heywood is “King of the Hill”

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Young stock car driver Josh Terry was the man to beat at Airborne Park Speedway on Saturday, August 8, as he took down the Ernie’s Discount Tools 100. The victory highlighted a night of action for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Yandow Sales & Service and John Deere that also saw Jason Durgan, Kris Clark, and Nick Heywood score victories.

Terry, 21, of Essex, NY has begun to make a habit of winning in the intermediate Key R-D Trailer Sales Renegade division at Airborne, with Saturday’s triumph being his third win of the season and the second 100-lap win of his career. Zach Rabtoy, Tylor Terry – the winner’s brother – and Robert Gordon took turns leading the first half of the race before a scheduled refueling break at lap 50 and an invert of the top eight runners.

Josh Terry was running strong in fourth place at the halfway break, then drove from fifth at the invert to grab the lead from Dylan Rabtoy in just four laps. He led the rest of the race despite a rash of caution flags. His brother, Tylor, saw a late charge end three laps from the finish when his car burst into flames; he was uninjured but knocked out of contention.

Gordon, of Milton, VT, finished second, followed by Plattsburgh, NY’s Zack Daniels, who ran near the front of the field for all 100 laps. Dylan Rabtoy of Swanton, VT finished fourth with Richie Turner of Fairfax, VT fifth. Keith O’Neil and rookie Michael Wright were next in line, followed by Tylor Terry, rookie Tony Salerno, and fan favorite Curt “Metal Man” Giventer.

The championship point lead changed hands for the third consecutive event, and Turner finds himself back on top, just one point ahead of Gordon (527-526). Previous leader Shawn Duquette fell out of the race and finished 14th, dropping to third place in the standings, 11 points behind Turner.

The headline J&S Steel Modified division saw another competitive 35-lap race, won by Jason Durgan. The Morrisonville, NY driver wasted little time getting through traffic, coming from 12th starting position to enter the top five in just four laps. He tracked down veteran Andy Heywood to grab the lead at lap 21 and sped off to his third win of the season. Point leader Nick Heywood of Plattsburgh finished as the runner-up, with his uncle Andy Heywood third in his first start of the season. Bucko Branham and Leon Gonyo completed the top five finishers, ahead of Danny Sullivan, Jayson Criss, Jamie LaFountain, Mike Wells, and Timex Morgan.

Nick Heywood was able to stretch his point lead back out to 25 points (647-622) over Greg Atkins, and Branham’s recent gains leave him in third place just nine more points behind. Heywood is aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive track championship.

Kris Clark of Keeseville, NY won his fifth Busch Beer Mini-Modified feature of the season in a 15-lap race. Chris LaVair of Gabriels, NY finished second, followed by Dale O’Neil, Tyler Irwin, and Harold LaVair. Chris LaVair leads Clark in the championship battle by a comfortable 43 points (599-556).

Nick Heywood won the final race of the night as the Modified class was featured in the Ernie’s Discount Tools “King of the Hill” one-on-one elimination bracket tournament. Heywood, the #1 seed, defeated Mike Wells and Leon Gonyo in preliminary rounds, then beat rookie Jamy Begor, the #7 seed, in the final round for the $500 winner’s bonus.

Airborne Park Speedway is back in action on Saturday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m. as Vertigo Motorsports and Econo Lodge present the annual Kids’ Racecar Rides at intermission and “Spectator Races” for street-legal vehicles.
