Thornton Cleans House Again at CSP Stock Car Shootout 100 Weekend

PEORIA, Ariz. (September 6, 2015) – For the second year in a row, Chandler, Arizona’s Ricky Thornton, Jr., made the most of Canyon Speedway Park’s “Stock Car Shootout 100” Labor Day Weekend double by picking off a pair of wins on Sunday night.

Not only did he capture the $2,000 winner’s share in Sunday night’s “Stock Car Shootout 100” finale for the second year in a row, he also completed a sweep of the weekend’s IMCA Modified action atop the 1/3-mile clay oval.

After timing in second quick among the 27-car Arizona Differential Pure Stock field and then racing up to second to earn the fourth starting position in Sunday’s Stock Car 100 Shootout finale, Thornton, Jr., capitalized on some late-race misfortune for Matt Martinez to take the big winner’s check for the second year in a row.

With Martinez suffering distributor problems in the latter stages of the 100-lapper for the Pure Stocks, Thornton, Jr., took command and raced on to the checkered flag ahead of Zack Madrid with fast qualifier Ty Warner rounding out the podium in third.  Justin Thornton raced from 21st to fourth with Joe Vlasity on his heels with a rally from 22nd to round out the top five.

Thornton, Jr., continued his weekend mastery of the 9th World Vapor IMCA Modified ranks as well, this time racing from the 12th starting position to capture victory honors after racing from 10th on Saturday night.

His seventh IMCA Modified win of the year at CSP on Sunday night came ahead of Steve Stultz with Brian Schultz, Jinger Kesler, and Nate Warren also among the top five.

Daniel Romero backed up his points lead in the Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Renegade class by racing from fourth to capture his third win of the year ahead of Jason Crowe, Virgil McArthur, Ross Krajeck and Dustin Way.

Tyler Merrill rallied from seventh to add his third AMA Mod Lite triumph of the year at CSP by racing to the stripe ahead of 13th-starter Brenden Priest and Josh Rivera while Glen Branham raced from sixth to claim his first Dwarf Car win ahead of Tim Cotherman and Tony Martin.

A busy September at Canyon Speedway Park continues with a Thursday, September 17, Open Practice from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. preceding the Mr. Excitement 40 Tribute to Terry Belcher featuring the West Coast Late Models, 9th World Vapors IMCA Modifieds, Arizona Differential Pure Stocks, Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Renegades and AMA Mod Lites on September 18-19.
