Whelen Southern Modified Notes: S. Boston
Close Battle For Championship Highlights Second Race At Track
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 2015 season for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour is shaping up to be one for the record books.
Jason Myers holds the record for the most starts in the history of the tour having started 130 of the 131 races held under NASCAR sanctioning, but the one item he wants to collect to complete his resume: a NWSMT championship.
Myers leads defending champion Andy Seuss and his older brother, Burt, by just one point (308-307) heading into the South Boston 150 on Saturday and when you add Kyle Ebersole and George Brunnhoelzl III in the equation, it makes for high anticipation in the ninth race on this year’s schedule 11-event schedule.
Ebersole is the defending race winner of the fall event at South Boston and he sits just five points out of the lead with four-time tour champion Brunnhoelzl III nine points back after winning the most recent race at Langley Speedway two weeks ago.
The Myers brothers are the only two drivers in the top five that have yet to win a NWSMT race at South Boston with Jason scoring a career-best seventh-place finish three times. Burt has seven top-10 finishes in as many starts with a top showing of third – twice.
Seuss leads all drivers with two wins with Brunnhoelzl scoring his lone win at the historic .4-mile track in 2013. Seuss,
Brunnhoelzl and Jason Myers are the only drivers in the field who have started all eight southern modified races held at the track since 2009.

Fast Facts
The Race: The South Boston 150 will be the ninth of 11 races of the 2015 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship season. This is the tour’s ninth visit to the historic oval, and the final of two slated for this year.
The Procedure: The starting field is 26 cars, including provisionals. The first 23 cars will qualify through two-lap time trials while the remaining three starting spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race is scheduled for 150 laps (68.25 miles) and teams have an opportunity to pit and change one tire during the event.
The Track: South Boston is a .4-mile high-banked asphalt oval located in South Boston, Virginia. The facility features NASCAR Whelen All-American Series-sanctioned events on Saturday nights throughout the racing season, headlined by the late model division. Some alumni of the track who have or are competing in one of NASCAR’s three national series include: Jeff and Ward Burton, Elliott and Hermie Sadler, Timothy Peters and Jeb Burton.
The Records: L.W. Miller holds the NWSMT track qualifying record at 14.466 seconds and 99.544 mph, set on April 14, 2012.
South Boston 150 Notes
Parity Rules At South Boston:
There have been seven different race winners in the previous eight events at South Boston Speedway. Andy Seuss is the only driver to win multiple races there while George Brunnhoelzl III and Danny Bohn are the only active drivers to have started from the pole twice.
Northern Leader Preece Returns To Go After Second Straight Win at SoBo: Not be outdone by their southern counterparts, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour also has a tight battle at the top with Ryan Preece leading the division by just one point as well. The Berlin, Conn. driver returns to South Boston Speedway to go after his second win in a row at the track. Preece won there in April and gave veteran car owner Mike Curb his first win on the southern tour.
Late-Season Charge For Brunnhoelzl III Continues: After George Brunnhoelzl III trailed by 24 points as recently as of August 1 at Bowman Gray Stadium, a fifth title this season appeared to be a long shot.
However, the recent run by the four-time champion continues to impress as he has moved up the standings. After winning at Langley on September 5, the Long Island, New York native is now within nine points of the lead with three races remaining on the schedule.
Home Tracks: Pulliam Honored At South Boston While Morris, Peters Pick Up Wins
After having a grandstand named after him at South Boston Speedway earlier this year, Lee Pulliam hopes to make more history at the track this weekend. Pulliam leads Oklahoma’s Thomas Tillison Jr. by 21 points (702-681) as he continues his quest for a third NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship. Pulliam also races at four other tracks in North Carolina and Virginia – which will probably keep him from winning the track championship at South Boston. Pulliam trails Matt Bowling 482-451 heading into Saturday night’s twin 75-lap season finales for the Late Model Stocks in track standings.
