Bowling wins SBS title, splits twinbill with Pulliam
South Boston, VA – Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Virginia did exactly what he needed to do in Saturday night’s season-ending twin 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division races at South Boston Speedway.
Bowling finished third in the first race and won the nightcap, taking the lead from Nathan Crews of Long Island, Virginia on the seventh lap and leading the rest of the way to score his fifth win of the season.
The win in the second race and a third-place finish in the first race gave Bowling his second career South Boston Speedway NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division championship.

Meanwhile, Lee Pulliam of Alton, Virginia continued his quest for a third career NASCAR Whelen All American Series national championship by winning the first of the night’s 75-lap races, taking the lead from pole winner Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Virginia on the 38th lap and leading the rest of the way to score his 10th win of the season at South Boston Speedway and his 29th win of the season.
Pulliam started seventh in the second race as the result of a drawing for an inverted start among the top finishers of the first race, and raced his way to second place by lap 19. He was unable to hold onto that spot, however, as Eric Winslow of Pelham, North Carolina sped past him with seven laps to go and dropped Pulliam back to third place, where he ultimately finished.
Thaxton had a good night, finishing second behind Pulliam in the first race, and finishing fourth in the nightcap. It was also a good night for Ronald Hill of Rougemont, North Carolina, who finished fourth in the first race and fifth in the nightcap.
A total of 18 cars started the two Late Model races.
Seuss Wins NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race
Andy Seuss of Hampstead, New Hampshire won Saturday night’s 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race, and with the victory, took over the lead in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour points chase with two races remaining for the season.
The victory was the third career win for Seuss at South Boston Speedway, and it came in a big way, with Seuss leading 142 laps of the 150-lap race.
George Brunnhoelzl III of West Babylon, New York finished second, .717-second behind Seuss, with pole winner Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord, North Carolina, Frank Fleming of Mt. Airy, North Carolina and Jeremy Gerstner of Wesley Chapel, Florida rounding out the top five finishers.
Seuss holds a 10-point lead over both Burt Myers, who finished sixth and Jason Myers, who finished seventh. Brunnhoelzl is now in fourth place, 13 points behind Seuss.
The race was a competitive one, with four lead changes among Seuss and Brunnhoelzl.
