NHRA Drag Racing Facts:
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series is the world’s number one when it comes to the fastest, loudest and most dramatic form of motorsport on the planet. Nobody does ground-shaking like Top Fuel, and though that’s the headline class there are three others – Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Bike.
All of them make numbers that defy the imagination as well as the laws of physics and until you’ve seen thousands of horsepower totally overwhelm the conventional restrictions of aerodynamics and traction – well, you haven’t really been racing, have you.
POWER – A Top Fuel dragster lets rip with more than 7,000 horsepower, making more noise than Iron Maiden in concert, and a pair of them in side by side action register above 2.5 on the Richter scale, officially qualifying each race as a minor earthquake.
SPEED – Top Fuel dragsters are the fastest-accelerating vehicles on earth. Standstill to 100 miles an hour in less than a second, generating 8G at launch, standstill to 320 miles an hour in a bit less than 4 seconds – less time than it took to read this sentence.
NUMBERS – If nothing breaks it costs $1,000 per second to run a Top Fuel car. It destroys all 8 spark plugs each time, burns more than 20 gallons of nitromethane at $50 a gallon, and sucks in air at 3,000 cfm – so fast it freezes the intake and is virtually a solid inside the cylinders.
