Never Been This Far Before: Johnstown, New York’s Craig Hanson Set For Southernmost Start Saturday, March 12 At Georgetown Speedway; Plans To Chase STSS North Region Points

GEORGETOWN, DE – To quote the lyrics of country music legend Conway Twitty, “you’ve never been this far before.”

That’s the case for Johnstown, N.Y., driver Craig Hanson as he prepares for the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial at Georgetown Speedway Saturday, March 12.

Hanson will be venturing to the state of Delaware for the first time to compete in the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP 49-lap big-block/small-block Modified event offering $4,900 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $490 to take the green flag. The Melvin L. Joseph Memorial serves as Round No. 1 of the seven-race STSS Velocita South Region.

Hanson’s initial trip to Georgetown will mark the southernmost start of his dirt Modified career. He races regularly in New York’s Capital District at Fonda Speedway, where he is a feature winner, and neighboring Glen Ridge Motorsports Park, where he was the Modified track champion in 2007.

Hanson, 31 years old, won the signature BD Motorsports Media LLC event – the “Working Man’s Race” Short Track SuperNationals – in 2013 and joined the ranks as a traveler with the Short Track Super Series a year later.

The second-generation driver’s previous most “southern” start came last May at Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa., when he drove to a top-10 finish in his debut at the track, the 50-lap STSS ‘Anthracite Assault’ combination North and South race.

Again, Hanson’s family fielded No. 20c – now a Teo-Pro chassis after an off-season switch – will follow the STSS Halmar International North Region, which kicks off on Saturday, April 2 at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y.

Hanson and team are taking advantage of the early season date at Georgetown for a “racing vacation” in Delaware.

“We’ll be getting some windshield time,” said Hanson, whose one-way trip to Georgetown is approximately six hours. “We’re looking forward to getting away for a few days and trying something different. It’s the furthest away I’ve ever raced.”

The journey for Hanson and his STSS South counterparts begins on Saturday, March 12 at Georgetown, Del.

Joining the STSS Modifieds on the March 12 card: Crate 602 Sportsman, Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Cars, Little Lincolns, Delmarva Chargers and Delaware Super Trucks.

On Saturday (March 12), pit gates open at 11 a.m. and grandstand gates are unlocked at noon. The drivers’ meeting takes place at 2:30 p.m., with hot laps at 3 p.m. and racing at 4 p.m.

Admission is $20 for Adults. Seniors (ages 65 and up) and Students (ages 13-17) pay $16. Kids 9-12 are $10 and those under eight are admitted FREE. Pit admission is $35 (ages 13 and up), $10 for Kids 6-12 and $2 for those five and under.

An open practice is slated for Friday, March 11 with gates opening at 4 p.m. and practice at 6:30 p.m. Grandstand admission is FREE and pit admission is $20.

A Sunday, March 13 rain date for the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial will be utilized if needed.

Georgetown Speedway, originally constructed by Melvin L. Joseph in 1950, is located at the intersection of Route 113 and Speedway Road in Georgetown, Del., just miles from the Delaware beaches and less than a 40-minute drive from Ocean City, Md.
