Wilson Plays a Winning Tune Again in Nashville
Donnie Wilson won Friday’s SSS race at Nashville
NASHVILLE, TN — With a mid-race pass of Steve Wallace, Donnie Wilson was able to add a new piece of music memorabilia to his collection Friday night.
Wilson sped away in the second half of Friday’s Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco 50-lap feature at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville to earn the prized jukebox trophy bestowed upon him in victory lane. The new piece of hardware will make sweet music alongside the guitar the Oklahoman won from his first SSS victory in 2014.
“This place is awesome. It’s one of my favorite tracks,” said Wilson. “I won two years ago to get a guitar and won tonight to win a jukebox, so that’s pretty cool. Not very many people can say they’ve won here, but now I can say I’ve won at least twice. Last year we won one Southern Super Series race and two years ago we won three races, so hopefully this will boost us up where we can win a couple more this year.”
With the victory in Friday’s Southern Super Series points event, Wilson will be among the top-eight starters in Saturday’s 75-lap, non-points North/South Super Late Model Challenge at Nashville. That race will combine the Southern Super Series and the ARCA/CRA Super Series drivers in an all-star short track battle.
After setting Southern Super Series fast time in qualifying Friday afternoon and a runaway victory in the 50-lap feature that followed, Wilson enters Saturday’s all-star event with a new-found confidence.
“It’s been pretty fast today. The plan was to be fast right off the trailer, and it has been. It’s been a great day and this doesn’t happen very often. Hopefully, it’s just as fast tomorrow for the 75-lap race.
“Winning gives you a lot of confidence. The car’s good, but we need to make a couple changes to make it better for 25 more laps, but I think we’ll be okay.”
Wallace, who led the opening 24 laps before Wilson worked his way by, finished second. Bubba Pollard, Derek Scott, Jr. and Quin Houff rounded out the top five.
Saturday’s North/South Super Late Model Challenge, featuring the stars of the Southern Super Series and ARCA/CRA Super Series, can be seen on a live video broadcast on Speed51.com.
