Payson, Malaquias Readying for Icebreaker, Road Race Style at Thompson
Drivers with Varying Experience Ready to Open Sports Car Season
STONINGTON, CT –The Icebreaker, Road Race Style, an event promoted and managed by OTB Promotions, Inc., is the first opportunity for drivers to engage in wheel-to-wheel sports car racing following the New England winter. Scheduled for Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP), the event provides over two hours of track time at a very affordable entry fee – as low as $200. Veteran driver Ken Payson (Rutland, MA) and rookie Dan Malaquias both see the value the event offers, and look forward to putting their skills and their car to the test on Thompson’s technical 1.7-mile road course.
Payson is a defending Icebreaker, Road Race Style Champion, picking up the win in his No. 95 Hoosier Racing Tire/MAZDA/Rigoli.com-sponsored Miata during the inaugural event last season. The track design is one that the 46-year veteran is fond of, citing it’s speed and “good layout.” Payson is hopeful that he will not only defend his Icebreaker, Road Race Style title in 2016, but qualify for the Sports Car Club of America’s (SCCA) National Runoffs at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (OH).
In 2015, Dan Malaquias (Ivoryton, CT) participated in the SCCA Bracket Enduro with little to no seat time entering the event. Building on the experience gained there, the rookie driver believes that the track layout is one that can help him continue to develop his skills. Malaquias identified “a number of low-speed turns which makes controlled braking while maintaining momentum extremely important.”
His goals, therefore, are different than Payson’s. “My intention is to gain clean racing experience and have some fun,” the CT-native noted. Driving the No. 131 1991 Porsche 911, Malaquias was quick to thank those who support him. “It starts with my wife, as without her support for my go-fast ambition, I would not be racing. Additionally, I’d like to thank my friend John for his encouragement, as well as Mario and the team at European Auto Services (Clinton, CT) for making sure the car was ready.”
Payson and Malaquias join drivers from all of New England, and as far away as Florida, for the Icebreaker, Road Race Style. Registration for the just for fun, non-points event is still open on MotorsportReg.com.
The Icebreaker, Road Race Style is scheduled for April 29 – 30 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. For more event information, including schedule ticket information, please visit the event page on www.thompsonspeedway.com.
