Spencer Davis Looking Forward to Stafford Speedway return for NASCAR 150 K&N Pro Series Event and WEEI 105.5FM Fan Experience
Stafford Springs, CT — When the teams of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series descend upon Stafford Speedway for the NASCAR 150 on June 16-17, the majority of teams and drivers will be seeing the half-mile layout for the very first time. But that won’t be the case for 17-year old Dawsonville, GA native Spencer Davis. Davis made two NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour starts last year at Stafford in the #79 Hillbilly Racing machine and feels like his Stafford experience, however limited it may be, will give him a leg up on the competition behind the wheel of the #41 Davis Poultry Chevrolet.
“I’m real excited to get back to Stafford,” said Davis. “I’ve run 2 Whelen Modified Tour races there and I had a little bad luck in those races, but Stafford is a real fun track and I’m looking forward to getting back up north. The line at Stafford is a little bit different than your usual standard racing line and I’ll know what to expect for tire fall off, so I think I’ll have a little advantage over most of the other drivers.”
All of the NASCAR K&N teams will have a chance to get caught up to Davis’ track knowledge with a test and tune session followed by the WEEI 105.5FM Fan Experience on June 16. The K&N teams will practice from 3:00pm-6:30pm which will be followed by Stafford opening its paddock area from 6:45pm-8:00pm for the WEEI 105.5FM Fan Experience where fans will be able to walk through the paddock and get a preview of the cars and team haulers, as well as meet the drivers. The June 16 WEEI 105.5FM Fan Experience will be open to the public FREE of charge.
“That practice is going to be the most important part of the weekend,” said Davis. “Being a new team, we have no notes to work off. I think the last K&N race at Stafford was 2008 so it’s going to help a lot to get the knowledge we’ll need for the race. I’m also really excited to meet with the fans again at Stafford. They’re a great group of people up there who come out to watch the races and I’m looking forward to meeting them again.”
Although he is only 17 years old, Davis has compiled an impressive racing resume. Davis began his career at age 6 in the go kart ranks and racked up over 30 victories and multiple championships. Davis then moved into the Late Model ranks where he won his first track championship in 2012 at Georgia’s Gresham Motorsports Park and finished second in the PASS South Super Late Model standings in 2013. 2014 was a big year for Davis as he made his NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour debut, won the Whelen Southern Modified Tour Rookie of the Year, and made his K&N Series debut. The 2016 season has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for Davis and the #41 team. They led the points standings after the first two races and Davis scored his first K&N Pro Series pole at Mobile earlier this season, but some bad luck in the last two races have seen them slip back to fourth in the points.
“The season has been good for us so far,” said Davis. “We had the points lead after the first two races but the last two races have bit us a little bit. We’ve had a little bad luck with a wreck and a parts failure but it’s inevitable that you’re going to have a bad race or two. I’m just glad it happened to us early in the season and hopefully we’ve got our bad races out of the way and we can get them behind us.”
With his track knowledge and experience at Stafford, Davis feels like the NASCAR 150 could be a prime opportunity to collect his first career K&N Pro Series victory, which would come on the heels of freshly being named one of the members of the NASCAR Next Class of 2016. Davis already has in mind a strategy that he wants to follow to put the #41 in NAPA Victory Lane.
“It’s a real big deal and it’s a big, big honor to be part of the NASCAR Next program,” said Davis. “Everyone in the program are drivers who the judges feel like are the next up and coming drivers so it’s a huge honor for me to be a part of it. I think the biggest thing will be to race your own race. There’s probably going to be some people going hard at the start and making some dive bomb moves like you see in the modified races at Stafford, we just have to keep the tires on the car and keep the fenders straight. I feel like Stafford is going to be just like New Smyrna was for us in being a track that I’ve raced on before. Being able to come to Stafford with some knowledge of previous races is only going to help.”
The WEEI 105.5FM Fan Experience will be open FREE of charge to race fans on Thursday, June 16. There will be a test and tune session from 3pm-6:30pm and at the conclusion of the practice, Stafford Speedway will open its paddock area to allow race fans and media to meet the drivers as well as getting a preview of the cars and team haulers from 6:30pm-8:00pm, much like the atmosphere at the track’s season beginning and season ending NAPA Pit Parties.
