New London-Waterford Results 05/21/2016
WATERFORD – Three first-time winners highlighted a packed racing card Saturday at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.
Joey Polewarczyk Jr. was dominant in driving to victory in the 100-lap American-Canadian Tour feature.
Diego Monahan won the first 35-SK Modified feature of the evening, which was the conclusion of an event that was suspended after 17 laps because of rain on May 14.
Dylan Izzo picked up his first career win in the second 35-lap SK Modified feature.
Cory DiMatteo was a first-time winner in the 25-lap SK Light Modified field. Monte Gibbs joined the first timers with victories in the 25-lap Limited Sportsman feature. Sean Caron got the win in the 25-lap Mini Stock feature.
Polewarczyk, of Hudson, N.H., went to the lead on a lap 19 restart and never trailed again in the American Canadian Tour feature.
Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, Mass. was second and Scott Payea of Milton, Vt. third.
Polewarczyk started third in the field behind pole-winner Scott Payea and second place starter Dillon Moltz.
Polewarczyk went to the lead past Payea on a lap 13 restart, but Payea grabbed the top spot back on a lap 17 restart.
But all the drama at the front was over after Polewarczyk went to the lead on the lap 19 restart.
MacDonald got by Payea for second with just under 15 laps left.
With 18 laps remaining in the 35-lap feature SK Modified that began on May 14, Monahan, of Quaker Hill, restarted from the top spot with Ted Christopher on his outside.
Monahan was able to hold off the advances of Christopher on three restarts over the first four laps.
On lap 13 Christopher spun coming off of turn four.
The race restarted with Dennis Perry riding to the outside of Monahan, but there was no lane for him to find a way past the leader.
Perry, of Pawcatuck, held on for second place and Paul Kusheba IV of Monroe finished third.
In the second SK Modified feature, Izzo, of Monroe, started second and took the lead from Ryan Morgan on the first lap.
From there he had little trouble creeping away from the field after numerous restarts.
But with five laps remaining the caution flew which put Christopher restarting beside him.
Izzo got the jump on Christopher on the restart and was able to keep him at bay.
Christopher, of Plainville, held on for second and Bo Gunning of Bethlehem was third.
Gibbs, of Killingworth, picked up his first career Limited Sportsman victory.
Jack Aqualina and Jon Porter spent the first five laps of the event battling side-by-side for the top spot.
With 15 laps left Gibbs inserted himself into the battle, making for a three-wide fight off of turn two for the lead.
With 14 laps remaining it was Gibbs who came out of the battle with a lead he wouldn’t give up.
Chris Meyer of Norwich was second and Chris Douton of Waterford third.
Making his second start in the division, DiMatteo of Farmington won the SK Light Modified feature.
Tony Membrino Jr. of Berlin was second and Rick Williams of East Hampton third.
John O’Sullivan took the field to green at the start and Williams went to the lead early in the event. Membrino went to second on a restart with 18 laps remaining and with 12 laps left starting testing Williams in the outside lane.
With 11 laps left Corey Barry got by Membrino for second, but Membrino quickly regained the runner-up position two laps later.
On a restart with five laps remaining, DiMatteo went by Membrino for second place.
On a restart with two laps remaining DiMatteo was able to get by William for the top spot. The caution flew one more time after the leader took the white flag. On the final restart, DiMatteo was able to get away from the field with Membrino getting by Williams for second.
Caron, of East Hampton, picked up his first victory of the season by holding off Ken Cassidy Jr. over the closing laps of the Mini Stock feature.
Caron and Charles Canfield put on a side-by-side battle for the lead over the first 10 laps of the event.
With 11 laps remaining Cassidy went by Canfield for second place. A caution with three laps remaining gave Cassidy his best chance to unseat Caron, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Cassidy, of Lisbon, finished second. Dave Trudeau of Mansfield was third
