This Week Ahead: Super DIRTcar Series Takes On Quebec
The series heads to Autodrome Granby and Autodrome Drummond this week
WEEDSPORT, N.Y. – July 24, 2016 – The Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds head north of the border this week for the second time this season as the series takes on Autodrome Granby on Monday, July 25 and Autodrome Drummond on Tuesday, July 26.
The series rolls north after a blockbuster week of events at Eldora Speedway and Sharon Speedway in Ohio. Tim Fuller and Matt Sheppard both found their way back to victory lane. Jimmy Phelps picked up his first victory of the season.
All three of this week’s winners look to continue momentum in Quebec. Last year at Granby Sheppard finished 3rd, Fuller finished 9th, and Phelps finished 10th. At Drummond, Sheppard finished 2nd, Phelps finished 4th, and Fuller finished 21st.
Will those three be the ones to beat again this week or will another racer find his way to the top?
AUTODROME GRANBY
Last year it was Larry Wight who won a thrilling 100-lapper over Brett Hearn at Granby.
After a third caution on lap 41, the Granby 100 turned into a two-car race with multiple lead changes between Wight and Hearn. Wight finally gained some daylight in the closing laps for an eight-car-length victory – the second of his Super DIRTcar Series career.
Matt Sheppard, who pitted early to remedy a bad push, fought all the way back to a third-place finish after working underneath Danny Johnson on lap 71. Johnson was fourth, followed by Billy Decker.
Wight, driver of the Gypsum Express No. 99L, set a new track record during time trials, won his qualifying heat, drew the pole and sealed the deal in a 100-lap thriller despite a big-time test from Hearn.
AUTODROME DRUMMOND
Last year it was Hearn who outclassed the field from time trials to checkers in the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified 100 at Autodrome Drummond.
The eight-time Series champion, who didn’t have a podium finish in the first eight races, came off the hauler swinging on the Drummond 3/8 mile.
Hearn was challenged briefly by runner-up Matt Sheppard after the seventh caution on lap 66.
Steve Bernard, of Granby, started 19th and finished third at Sheppard’s bumper. Jimmy Phelps rose as high as second before settling for fourth ahead of Dany Bilodeau of Victoriaville, Quebec.
Coming Up Next
After this upcoming week, the series then heads to Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ontario on Monday, Aug. 1 and Ransomville (N.Y.) Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
