Wilson Leads Southern Super Series Into Final Stage of 2016
PENSACOLA, Fla. — As the month of August progresses, the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco prepares to enter its final phase of the 2016 season and teams are using the late summer break to their own advantage. Whether catching up with personal matters, taking a vacation, or putting time into the race cars, drivers are eager to return to action.
Current SSS points leader Donnie Wilson is among them; he has one of the boldest remaining schedules amongst the points leaders. The Oklahoma driver plans to compete in the final three SSS races of the season, while also taking a couple of trips up north.
“We’ve been in the process of building a new car and maintaining my other two cars. Our busiest time of the year is coming up,” Wilson said. “We’ve got Mobile, CRA at Winchester, then Montgomery, then off a week then we run Pensacola, then the All-American 400 and the Winchester 400. We’ve got six races in seven weeks.”
Despite the championship lead coupled with a springtime victory at Nashville, Wilson has not been as pleased with his performances in the middle of the season. On two occasions while having a car capable of winning, bad luck has fallen the way of the No. 2W team.
“I was happy with the first part (of the year). We really had some weird stuff happen through the middle part of the year,” Wilson explained. “We had a tire go down at Montgomery while running second. The last race at Pensacola we qualified in the top five, running second and we had an alternator go bad. We finished but it was laps down, and gave up a lot of points that night. We struggled at Opp and Cordele; we’re still looking for answers. As far as the other tracks, I feel pretty good about them, just bad luck.”
Wilson is more than ready to turn his luck around starting with the next race at Mobile International Speedway on Saturday, August 20. While the prospect of winning his first career SSS championship is high, he wants to do it in dominating fashion.
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. We got a pretty good points lead with three races left, we got over a race lead. If we take care of business the next few races we should be in good shape for the series. But we want to win every race we go to, we’ll be looking to win in Mobile.”
Chris Davidson currently sits 61 points back of Wilson in the series standings heading into Mobile. Kyle Grissom is another 23 markers back in third while Kenzie Ruston and Zane Smith complete the top five.
