PIT BOX: Modifieds Thunder Into Bristol

Mid-Week Whelen Combo Event Set; Pinty’s Heads To Riverside

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

• The NASCAR Whelen Modified tours make their eighth stop at Thunder Valley Wednesday, as the annual mid-week clash between the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour takes center stage at Bristol Motor Speedway. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Ryan Newman is the only driver to win twice at “The World’s Fastest Half Mile,” and it’s an opportunity for a big championship impact for several drivers. NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour points leader Doug Coby returns to the track where he exited early last year after just two laps. Coby followed up that misfortune with runner-up finish and three wins to claim his third tour title. Justin Bonsignore cut Coby’s lead to 15 with his win Wednesday at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Burt Myers is also coming off a win in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and carries a 17-point edge on defending tour champion Andy Seuss.

• With four races remaning in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series championship run, the series returns to oval racing Saturday. The Bumper To Bumper 300 marks the series farthest eastern race, at Riverside International Speedway, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Andrew Ranger pushed his points lead to Josten’s Rookie of the Year candidate Cayden Lapcevich. Ranger has a win (2009) and three top fives at the third-mile oval that’s banking is based on Bristol. Lapcevich will be making his debut at Riverside, and has a win, two seconds and a third on ovals this year. DJ Kennington (two wins, six top fives in nine starts) and Mark Dilley (one win, seven top fives in nine starts) have had the most success at the track.
