Tremont Penalized at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Dirt Track

Winner Hackel’s engine clears full teardown

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Devil’s Bowl Speedway officials have announced a penalty levied against NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman Modified driver Kenny Tremont Jr., stemming from the 35-lap feature race event held on Sunday, August 14 at the 3/10-mile Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl.

Tremont crossed the finish line in second place but his No. 115 car was found with an unapproved carburetor spacer plate in post-race technical inspection.  As a result, Tremont has been dropped from his original second-place finishing position and will officially be scored as the last driver on the lead lap in the August 14 event, moving him back to collect 10th-place points and purse money.  Tremont will also be penalized to the last-place starting position at the next event he enters at the Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, and he has been placed on probation through the remainder of the 2016 racing season at the track.

The part in question was permitted for use at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in 2014 and 2015, but is not approved in the 2016 rulebook.

“The Tremont team has always had respect for the rulebook and I believe that their infraction was simply an oversight,” Devil’s Bowl promoter Mike Bruno said.  “Our inspectors had not specifically checked the carburetor spacer on the No. 115 car this season until Sunday night.  I don’t believe that the spacer is the reason that the Tremont team has done well this year, but it did violate the spirit of the rules in place and we have to take action.”

From the same event, the General Motors “602” crate engine used by race winner Bobby Hackel and impounded by Devil’s Bowl Speedway officials following the race was reported to have passed a full teardown inspection on Tuesday, August 16.  Hackel scored his fourth win of the season at the event.

The penalty to Tremont moves original third-place finisher Kevin Chaffee up to the runner-up position, and Allan Hammond will inherit third place.  Wayne Stearns and Justin Comes complete the revised top five.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is in action on its half-mile Asphalt Track on Saturday, August 20 at 7:00 p.m., with Brown’s Quarried Slate/Brown’s Orchard & Farm Stand Night featuring the annual Mini Stock Special event and free guided pit area tours.  The 3/10-mile Dirt Track runs on Sunday, August 21 at 6:00 p.m. with the rescheduled “Vince Quenneville Sr. Memorial” 38-lap Sportsman Modified special presented by Interstate All Battery Center.
