Terry McCarl Holds On for Fall Brawl Glory at I-80 Speedway

GREENWOOD, Neb. (October 1, 2016) Victory was sweet on Saturday night as the fifth annual Casey’s Mid-West Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway did not disappoint as Terry McCarl parked TheSnowPlow.com/Searsboro Telephone No. 24 in Victory Lane with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network for a cool $6,000 plus an additional $1,750 in lap money.

T-Mac’s first National Tour triumph of the 2016 season, the Iowa shoe had to hold off several challenges throughout the 35 lap affair.

“You want to be on the front, but those guys behind me were good and as usual the track was amazing,” commented McCarl on the front stretch.

“This may be my favorite track in the country because when you come here there’s a top, a middle, and a bottom but it made it tough for me leading. My car was good, but I just didn’t know where to go and the No. 82 got by me there on the bottom in traffic so I jumped down there and I didn’t hear anybody after that. I figured Jack [Dover] was coming. I felt a lot better on the top of one and two, and I figured he was catching me there.”

Challenged early by Jack Dover as the race found slower traffic, the two front runners were lucky to make it the distance as drivers at the back of the field piled up with 11 laps complete. Taking out seven, and flipping five, all drivers were able to walk away. Among the collected, Matt Covington and Don Droud, Jr. were able to return to competition.

Utilizing an open red, Dover worked a gear change to try and run with the No. 24 but would end up falling back as Thomas Kennedy’s No. 82 came to life. Advanced to fourth following the red, Kennedy found second on Lap 17. Running down McCarl’s straightaway advantage, the Buffalo Wild Wings No. 82 went to work on McCarl as the pair hit slower traffic. Glued to the hub of the I-80 Speedway, Kennedy stole the lead for a brief moment, only to have the crafty veteran in the No. 24 turn down and around to retake the point.

Caution on Lap 30 for Josh Riggins, the restart was called back. Having fought to third, Wayne Johnson slowed suddenly with his brakes failing completely on the restart, causing the field to accordion off the fourth turn.Back to green, the race was on the cushion as Jack Dover was back to third. Digging his Hoosier into the massive I-80 Speedway cushion, the Speedway Graphics No. 53 was inches off the wall and closing on McCarl.

Game on as the white flag flew, Dover nearly tapped the wall off the exit of two; giving up just enough for McCarl to stave off any last lap attempt for the win.

On the runner-up finish, Dover said, “There on that open red, we switched the gear and I think that’s the difference between me talking about second and first right now. I think if we would have left the gears along, we could have worked around Terry, but I’m not disappointed. Anytime you can run second with the National guys, especially having not run with them for about five years, it’s a good night.”

Earning the night’s Searsboro Telephone Hard Charger award worth $1,000, Aaron Reutzel came from 13th to complete the podium.

“We were good. Way better than when we unloaded,” stated Aaron.

“Me and J.J. [Simmons] are just kind of stuck in our ways of what we did last year and I really figured we would have learned our lesson after last week when we weren’t very good and worked on it until we figured out what the car liked, but we were so fast year last year so we unloaded with the same setup and just had to keep working and working and actually had almost the same setup we had at Lucas Oil Speedway.”

Aaron also picked up an extra $500 from Electric Systems in the Podium Draw thanks to Terry McCarl.

After batting for the lead, Thomas Kennedy slipped back to finish fourth with Josh Baughman coming from 10th to complete the top-five. Justin Henderson sixth was followed by Carson McCarl. Blake Hahn from 12th crossed eighth with Cody Ledger ninth. From 17th, Ryan Roberts clawed his way to a tenth place showing.

Utilizing a unique format for the I-80 Speedway, twin Heat Races were run for 10 total Heats. Wins went to Josh Baughman, Tyler Drueke, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Rager Phillips, and Carson McCarl in the first set. The second set was topped by Terry McCarl, Jonathan Cornell, Josh Baughman, Wayne Johnson, and Jack Dover. Twin Dashes to set the Top-16 lineup in the A-Feature were won by Rager Phillips and Terry McCarl. B-Mains were won by Ryan Robers and Seth Brahmer.

Provisionals went to Logan Forler and Matt Covington for the Lucas Oil ASCS. Co-Sanctioned with the Carpet Land Nebraska 360’s, Stu Snyder and Don Droud, Jr. were the recipients.
