Evans Moves to Title Winning Seat in 2017
GT3 Cup Challenge Runner-up Confirms Carrera Cup Campaign
New Zealand born, Gold Coast based racer Jaxon Evans is the latest young gun to join the country’s premier one-make series, Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, following two seasons in the feeder Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia category.
Having finished a close runner-up in last season’s GT3 Cup Challenge series, Evans will now follow in the footsteps of another young Porsche star, Matt Campbell, when entering the 2017 Carrera Cup season and stepping into Campbell’s title winning McElrea Racing 911 GT3 Cup car.
The 20-year-old Evans is the latest drivers to ascend the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid, joining the likes of Campbell, Fraser Ross, Dylan O’Keeffe and James Abela as a driver to enter Carrera Cup having gained experience behind the wheel of a race-bred 911 in the GT3 Cup Challenge series.
“To be running out of the McElrea Racing camp, and in the 2016 championship winning car, will give me the best chance to adapt and to learn as quickly as possible,” said Evans.
“Although I’ll be facing new challenges like street circuits and some very experienced competitors, I’m really looking forward to mixing it up near the front of the field and developing and learning both on and off the track.”
McElrea Racing team boss, Andy McElrea, is equally as excited to have another fast youngster on his hands.
“Jaxon will surprise quite a few people this year. He’s very quick and shows great racing intelligence and was stiff not to claim last year’s GT3 Cup Challenge win,” said McElrea.
“He’s already well ensconced in the team and a really likeable young man, who I feel sure can follow in the footsteps of Matt Campbell, which is really exciting for our whole operation.”
The opening round of this year’s Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship will be contested on the streets of the Adelaide Parklands Circuit during the weekend of March 02-05, 2017.
