PRACTICE: Coby Back On Top
Four-Time Champion Tops Chart for Whelen Modified’s Sizzler
STAFFORD, Conn — After starting the 2017 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season with two finishes outside the top-10, four-time and defending series champion Doug Coby is looking to get back on track. Saturday, Coby got off to a good start — posting the fastest overall time in practice for Sunday’s NAPA Spring Sizzler 200 at Stafford Motor Speedway.
Behind the wheel of his Mayhew Tools No. 2, Coby posted a fast time of 17.976 seconds, which put him at the top of the charts in the first session. He completed the second and final practice in ninth spot.
Ryan Preece posted the second fastest time on Saturday, touring the half-mile in 19.979 seconds. Eric Goodale was third with a lap of 18.014 seconds, while Todd Szegedy posted the fourth fastest overall time of 18.028 seconds. Szegedy’s lap was fast enough to be the quickest time in the final practice session. Timmy Solomito, who has started the season with two straight top two finishes, posted a time good enough for fifth in the practice runs.
Chase Dowling, Shawn Solomito, Donny Lia, Ted Christopher and Max Zachem completed the top-10 fastest overall times on Saturday. Coming up at 2:30 p.m., teams will run for the pole in Coors Light Pole Qualifying.
