Travis Fisher Takes Late Model Opener at Evergreen Raceway
St. Johns, PA (5/28/2017)- For the first time this season, the Himmer Graphics Late Model division took to the asphalt at Evergreen Raceway and just like one year ago, Travis Fisher of Freeland walked away with the victory. After winning the Barbush Automotive Street Stock feature last weekend, Randy Schlenker of Walnutport never skipped a beat to repeat the victory. Thirteen-year-old Brayden Spencer of Shickshinny picked up his first Evan’s Roadhouse Four Cylinder feature win of the season and Mountaintop’s Harry O’Neill notched the feature win in the newly formed Wheel’s Bar & Grill Strictly Stock division.
Travis Fisher started from the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 30-lap Late Model feature over Kyle Harvell, Broc Brown, Francis Gross III, and Brad Brown. The caution flag waved just after a lap was complete when Brad Brown and Nick Ross tangled on the backstretch. The incident collected several others, including Geno Steigerwalt, and Rich Cooper. Fortunately, not one was injured, but the day for Steigerwalt and Ross came to a quick close.
Green flag racing resumed and Fisher didn’t give up the spot. He crossed the stripe for his first win of the season over Harvell, Broc Brown, Gross, and Brad Brown.
Fisher and Brad Brown were heat race winners.
Charlie Castiglione led the Street Stock field to the drop of the green flag in the 30-lap feature and before a lap was complete, Randy Schlenker made a bid for the lead. His pass was successful and he led the first circuit over Castiglione, Todd Ahner, Dan Pawlicki and Rich Paciotti.
The only yellow flag waved when Paciotti received a flat tire while battling for the third spot. He headed pit side and rejoined the action.
Ahner had climbed into second just before the yellow and lined up alongside Schlenker for the restart. However, Schlenker pulled a few car lengths following the drop of the green. He went on to take his second straight victory over Ahner, Pawlicki, Mike Pollock, and Paciotti.
Castiglione and Schlenker were heat race winners.
Austin Beers led the Four Cylinder field to the drop of the green in the 20-lap feature. He led the opening lap over Brayden Spencer, Ron Heeter, Jay Skupski and Shawn Kistler.
With one lap in the books, Spencer worked around the outside of Beers and into the race lead. One lap later Skupski moved to second.
The worst of three cautions occurred when Heeter tangled with Kistler while coming off of turn two. Both cars received damage, yet following quick crew work, both were able to continue.
Spencer was flawless on the restart and drove away to earn his first feature win of the season over Bob Azarowicz, and Skupski. Making his first career Four Cylinder start, Ray Kochin was fourth, followed by Heeter.
Beers and Heeter were heat race winners. With a seventh place finish, Jay Kanor was highest finishing car running under true Enduro rules.
The newly formed Strictly Stock division took to the track for a 20-lap contest. When it was all said and done, Harry O’Neill had soared to victory over Justin Nesbitt and Chris Angstadt.
The next Evergreen Raceway event is slated for Sunday, June 4.
