HWA AG Set to Join Formula E as Customer Team in Season Five

HWA AG enters as customer outfit in ABB FIA Formula E Championship – taking total number of teams to 11 for next season

AFFALTERBACH, GERMANY (May 9, 2018) – HWA AG is set to join the ABB FIA Formula E Championship as a new customer team for next season – taking the total amount of entrants to 11.

After working in close collaboration with the Venturi outfit throughout the current campaign as a provider of technical support, HWA AG will extend their existing partnership with the Monaco-based team to receive powertrains for the 2018/19 season.

The full entry list is scheduled to be confirmed and published by the FIA shortly in advance of season five – with the highly-anticipated introduction of the new-look faster and more energy efficient next generation of Formula E cars.

Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E, said: “Not only does Formula E have a new-look and unique visual identity for season five, with the futuristic next generation car – but we also have exciting news with a new team entering the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in HWA AG. It’s rewarding to see a name so synonymous with racing join the already impressive and growing list of teams and manufacturers competing in Formula next-generation proven track record in other categories and will surely push to replicate similar achievements in Formula E as we enter a new era of fully-electric racing. I’m glad to welcome Ulrich and HWA AG to the Formula E family. I’m eager to see them hit the track as a customer team later this year.”

Ulrich Fritz, CEO of HWA AG, added: “Formula E is a completely new motorsport discipline with extremely tough competition. It’s a challenge that we’re very happy to rise to. HWA AG are the most successful team ever in DTM history. Our goal is to continue the company’s success story in Formula E. At the same time, Formula E with its unique concept offers a completely new perspective on the future for motorsport. The series is characterised by its innovative pioneering spirit and by its willingness to develop new ways of interacting with the fans. The street races in the heart of some of the world’s largest and most important cities open-up many opportunities to appeal to an entirely new audience and to get them fired up for racing and for sustainable technologies of the future. In combination with the fierce competition on the racetrack, this is the perfect platform to demonstrate our core competencies on a global stage and to measure ourselves against the best teams.”

Gildo Pastor, President of Venturi Automobiles, said: “I’m delighted to contribute to HWA AG’s arrival as a Formula E team, by providing them our Venturi Gen2 cars for next season. Our partnership over the current season is a win for both organisations. I have no doubt that the experience of Venturi Automobiles in high-performance electric vehicles will be a valuable asset for HWA AG, who will be keen to add to an already impressive record.”

About the ABB FIA Formula E Championship:
The ABB FIA Formula E Championship is the electric street racing series and the world’s first fully-electric international single-seater category in motorsport. Formula E brings electrifying wheel-to-wheel action to some of the world’s leading cities, racing against the backdrop of iconic skylines such as New York, Hong Kong, Paris, and Rome.

The inaugural season of Formula E sparked into life in September 2014 around the grounds of the Olympic Park in Beijing. The fourth edition of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship will see 10 teams and 20 drivers compete in 10 cities spanning five continents in the fight to be crowned champion. Hong Kong hosted the season-opener over the course of two days on December 2 & 3, with the championship coming to a close in New York in July.

Formula E is more than just a race to be the best – it’s a competitive platform to test and develop road relevant technologies, helping refine the design and functionality of electric vehicle components and speeding-up the transition and uptake of clean transportation on a global scale.

For this season, more manufacturers have joined the electric revolution with reigning champion Lucas di Grassi looking to defend his title for the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team. More big-name manufacturers have also committed to race in Formula E – including BMW and Nissan in tandem with the new-look car and battery in season five, along with Mercedes-Benz and Porsche who also plan to join the following year.
