‘The Track at Hillside’ Ushers in its New Name…and New Era
THE TRACK @ HILLSIDE RACE RESULTS-MAY 18, 2018
May 18, 2018 — HOLLAND, NY…On a clear spring evening, a new era began in western New York motorsports as new management opened the gates to The Track At Hillside for its first event of 2018 under new management under the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series banner.
Patrick Emerling outpaced Scott Wylie at the start of the 40-lap SST Modified feature event as Neil Dietz Jr slipped past Wylie into the second spot. Eddie Hawkins closed on Wylie at the halfway point, but could not find a way through as Emerling and Dietz pulled out to a several second advantage. Emerling’s car was not handling the way he wanted it to, but he was able to keep Dietz at bay by a few car lengths in the caution-
free feature and took the win over Dietz Jr., Wylie, Edwards, and Connor Sellars.
SST Modified heats were won by Scott Wylie and Patrick Emerling.
AJ Hessler grabbed the top spot at the start of the 25-lap NYPA TQ Midget feature, but a spin by Jim Musto set up a complete restart. Dave Wollaber and Kyle Hutchinson rocketed into the top two spots on the restart, with Hutchinson taking the lead on lap 3. Erik Musto moved into third spot as Vinnie Christiano Jr. battled Ted Jones Jr. for fifth. Jones faded a couple of laps from the finish as Hutchinson held off Wollaber to take the opening night win. Wollaber was second, followed by Musto, Vinnie Christiano Jr., and Tony Patrea.
NYPA TQ Midget heats were won by AJ Hessler and Dave Wollaber.
In the 35-lap Street Stock 8 feature, Nik Welshans jumped out to the early lead as John Carlson battled with Ken Maltby for second spot. Maltby and Marty Hughes moved past Carlson, who began to fade, eventually dropping out on lap 21 with a fluid leak. That bunched the field for a restart, and after a few laps of side by side racing, Maltby took the lead and held off Welshans by a few car lengths for the win. Hughes was third, with Josh Hathaway snagging the fourth spot over Tim Welshans by a wheel at the line.
Street Stock 8 heats were won by Nik Welshans and John Carlson.
Ken Hejna took the lead from the pole in the 25-lap Street Stock 4 feature and pulled away at the front of the field. Bob Bogner was able to move into the second spot while Jeff Szafraniec battled with Michelle Russo and Robert Palmer. The event went caution free with Kejna taking the win over Bogner, Szfraniec, Russo, and Palmer.
Street Stock 4 heats were won by Ken Hegna and Bob Palmer.
Racing at The Track At Hillside continues on Saturday, May 26th under the NASCAR Whelen All American Series banner when the SST Modifieds will be joined by the TQ Midget, Street Stock 8, Street Stock 4, and Crazy 8 divisions. Racing will begin at 4:00 p.m.
