Courtney Eyes Indiana Midget Week Crown After Posting Pair of Memorial Day Weekend Wins

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 29, 2018) – There’s nothing like having momentum on your side.

That’s exactly what Tyler Courtney takes into this week’s six-race Indiana Midget Week that kicks off Tuesday night at Montpelier Motor Speedway.  Courtney will go after the crown aboard the Clauson-Marshall Racing Driven2SaveLives/Indiana Donor Network No. 7bc Midget after topping the series most recent event at Kokomo on April 13.

Courtney carries into the crucial six night racing the momentum from a pair of wins last week including Wednesday night’s USAC Sprint Car “Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute Action Track and then Friday night’s “Josh Burton Memorial” at Bloomington Speedway.  Courtney nearly made it a third win on Sunday night at Kokomo Speedway only to run afoul of lapped traffic in the closing laps while leading the way. Sunshine’s other Memorial Day weekend outing was another podium finish in Thursday’s USAC Silver Crown “Hoosier Hundred” aboard the Hans Lein No. 97 entry.

Courtney’s week began at the Terre Haute Action Track aboard the Clauson-Marshall-Newman Racing Priority Aviation No. 7bc Sprint Car.  Courtney pounced on the lead on a late race restart and never looked back as he led the way over the final nine rounds for his fourth overall win of the year.

“It was awesome to get my first win at Terre Haute, that place has knocked me down a few times in the past,” Courtney explained of the Hulman Classic win.  “It’s something I dreamed about as a kid. (Former Terre Haute Action Track promoter) Don Smith had a big impact on getting my career going, so this one ranks right up there.”

The second round of USAC Silver Crown action followed on Thursday night with the Hoosier Hundred atop the Indiana State Fairgrounds one-mile dirt oval and Courtney responded by climbing from sixth to finish third for the second series event in a row.

Action shifted to Bloomington Speedway for the “Josh Burton Memorial” on Friday and Courtney made it his opportunity to pick up a fifth win on the season.

“That was a special win to me, it was great to celebrate the win not only with my team but with the Burton family as well,” Courtney explained.

After spotting for Jack Harvey at Sunday’s Indianapolis 500, Sunshine hustled up U.S. 31 to Kokomo Speedway for Sunday night’s BC Indiana Double.  And it looked to be another Sunshine score until lapped traffic eliminated his chances in the closing stages of the feature.

“A lapped car got out of shape ahead of me and I smoked him,” Courtney says.  “That’s one we should have won, but that’s part of it.”

With a handful of wins to his credit already in 2018, Courtney will try to tack on some more as Indiana Midget Week unfolds over the next six nights.

2018 Quick Stats:  23 races, 5 wins, 13 top-fives, 15 top-tens.
