Reid Lanpher Best in PASS Super Late Model Action at Oxford Plains Speedway
Oxford, Maine – Reid Lanpher of Manchester, Maine nailed down his second Pro All Stars Series North Super Late Model victory of the season Sunday afternoon at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Lanpher, who started 11th, needed nearly the entire race to chase down six-time PASS North champion Johnny Clark of Farmingdale, Maine and take the race lead. Clark, who led the first 138 circuits in the 150-lap race, managed to hang on to second place after dominating most of the rain-delayed event.
The championship battle remained tight atop the PASS North points standings, with reigning series champion and 2018 leader DJ Shaw of Center Conway, New Hampshire just one spot better than his closest championship rival, Travis Benjamin of Morrill, Maine, another former series champion.
Ryan Robbins of Dixfield, Maine, a two-time OPS Super Late Model winner this year, raced with the leaders throughout the 150-lapper and finished fifth. Maine racers Joey Doiron of Berwick, Ben Rowe of Turner, Billy Rodgers of Old Orchard Beach, Mike Rowe of Turner and Rusty Poland of Windham rounded out the top ten.
Kate Re of Lovell, Maine led wire-to-wire and won her first-ever PASS Mods main event.
Re, 14, held off a determined Gary Shackford to earn her trip to victory lane. Shackford finished second and came up eight points shy of his first Mods championship. The Center Conway, New Hampshire driver was a Street Stock champion at Oxford Plains Speedway about 15 years before winner Re was born.
Matty Sanborn of Windham followed up an impressive heat race victory with a third-place finish. Freeport’s Jariet Harrison pieced together a ride and claimed a fourth-place finish in front of Waterford’s Spencer Morse.
Ben Tinker of New Gloucester wrapped up his second consecutive PASS Mods championship with a sixth-place finish in a car usually driven by Patrick Sullivan. Tinker’s car was destroyed in a vicious crash a couple of weeks previously which ended the season for a couple of other competitors. The champion expressed a desire to move up into the Super Late Model ranks next season.
Gary Babineau of Hollis was dominant in a trouble-free 50-lapper for the Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stock division, cruising to victory in impressive fashion ahead of Gray’s Tyler King, who really was the king of 50-lappers this season. Michael Harrsion of Durham finished a distant third; with Waterboro’s Travis Lovejoy the last car on the lead lap, in fourth spot. Skip Tripp of Norway rounded out the top five.
Kyle Hewins of Leeds wrapped up the Bandits Triple Crown Series title the way you’d like to, in victory lane following a 30-lap jaunt in front of the field. Cody White of South Paris was a half-lap behind Hewins as the checkered flag, but that was enough to score a runner-up finish in a tight battle over Waterford’s Jamie Heath, Buckfield’s Chad Wills and Shaun Hinkley of Oxford.
Weekend rain forced track management to move the PASS program originally scheduled for Saturday to Sunday morning, and the result was an overflowing pit area filled with racecars (both real and imitation) as the originally-schedule Armegeddon of Destruction racing program followed the PASS action.
Dustin Salley prevailed in the 50-lap, 60-plus car enduro race on the greased-up, pumpkin-laden oval track. Salley, the 2018 Budweiser Championship Series Bandits division champion, started deep in the field and largely avoided trouble to claim victory. Chris Giguere was the best of the rest, with Josh Dube claiming the third-place trophy. The Tornado,Travis Verrill, was fourth across the finish line with Jeremy Guptill filling out the top five.
The new 2018 Oxford Acceleration Series Outlaw champion, Ajay Cates of Lyman, raced to victory in the 20-lap race for his class to close out a great season. Rick Thompson of Naples claimed runner-up honors, with Gerry Freve of Buckfield rebounding from a spin to earn third-place hardware. Steve Moon of Gray and Richmond’s Calab Emerson-Mains filled out the top five.
Racing three and four-wide at times, David Cook of Jay dominated the action in the Rebels division main event. Oxford’s Doug Degroat was runner-up, ahead of Mechanic Falls racer Matt Thibeault. Berlin, New Hampshire’s Mike McKinney and Cody White of South Paris rounded out the top five.
Newly-crowned division champion Brandon Varney of Mechanic Falls appeared to enjoy battling his uncle, Skip Tripp of Norway, for the win in the 20-lap Cruiser division feature race. Varney prevailed. Last year’s champion, Phil Knowlton of Oxford, was third. Matt Hiscock of Turner and Oxford’s William Barker completed the top-five rundown.
After wrecking in practice, Ryan Farrar of Oxford seemed determined not to have his perfect season ruined in the Truck class. Farrar borrowed Randy Green’s pickup and won another 20-lapper, remaining undefeated in 2018 feature race competition at the Speedway. John Lizotte of Lewiston, Kolby Morrell of Sebago and Greene racer Mike Mayberry followed.
Poland’s Dustin Salley aced the 15-lap 4-cylinder Figure 8 race. Travis ‘Tornado’ Verrill of South Paris was second under the checkered flag, with Cam Childs of Leeds filling out the podium. Greg Durgin of South Paris and Jeremy Lauzier of Rumford also were credited with finishes ahead of newly-crowned champion Kevin Varney of Mechanic Falls.
