Mother Nature Ends Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend At Georgetown Speedway

GEORGETOWN, DE – Despite the best efforts of track crew and management, the Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend at Georgetown Speedway fell to the weather.

On Saturday, forecasters called for clearing throughout the afternoon and evening. A heavy mist stayed over the speedway and didn’t allow for racing. As a result, the entire weekend’s program was slated to run on Sunday with hot laps scheduled at 10 a.m.

Track crews worked the Georgetown clay until midnight to prepare for the Sunday doubleheader.

Once again, Mother Nature had other ideas. Heavy rain moved over the facility from approximately 2-3 a.m. and thoroughly soaked the half-mile oval.

The remaining event was forced to be canceled at approximately 7:30 a.m.

“We tried our best this weekend based on the forecasted information available, but both days, the weathermen steered us wrong,” Georgetown promoter Brett Deyo said. “Sunday looked like a long day but a reality until the rain during the night put a stop to it with the track already saturated.

“I want to thank our staff for the hard work throughout the weekend and all the people who jumped in to try and make the show happen. Also, much appreciation to our racers and fans for their patience and understanding.”

The event will not be made up due to the crowded late-season schedule. As such, Ryan Watt has been declared the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Velocita-USA South Region $10,000 Modified champion and Corey Cormier takes the STSS Crate 602 Sportsman South Region title.

Refunds were issued at the track on Sunday. For those unable to return on Sunday, wristbands/tickets can be mailed to BD Motorsports Media at 26781 Curlew Way Millsboro, DE 19966.

Georgetown Speedway will kick off its 2019 season in March with an open practice followed by the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial weekend. Keep posted for updates during the winter months.

Georgetown Speedway, originally constructed by Melvin L. Joseph in 1949, is located at the intersection of Route 113 and Speedway Road in Georgetown, Del., just miles from the Delaware beaches and less than a 40-minute drive from Ocean City, Md.
