Carney Set for Lake Ozark Speedway Spring Nationals after Michigan Adventures
EL PASO, Texas (May 24, 2019) – Following on the heels of an eventful Michigan weekend, John Carney II continues his maiden voyage on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour with this weekend’s Second Annual Lake Ozark Speedway Soring 360 Nationals on Saturday and Sunday.
It will be another new track for the El Paso, TX, native after taking in Lake Odessa, Michigan’s I-96 Speedway last weekend.
Carney didn’t lack for speed at all in his first visit to I-96 aboard the Sander Construction/South Plains Auto Transport/Mesilla Valley Transportation No. J2 Sprint Car. He just didn’t have any luck to go along with it.
“We were very competitive, we had a good car both nights,” Carney commented.
After a heat race win and a run up to third in his qualifier, Carney gridded Friday’s feature outside the second row and was battling for fourth until contact from another car sent him bouncing off the track. Carney rebounded to salvage an eleventh-place finish for the night.
Bouncing right back on Saturday night, Carney won his heat race again and sat atop the point charts going into qualifying race action. Luck soured at that point, with engine issues arising while battling for the lead and then getting collected by another car in ‘B’ Main action. After using a provisional to start the main event, Carney made an early exit.
“I was making a slide for the lead in the qualifier and the motor broke,” Carney recalls. “That put us at the back of the ‘B’. One car was off the track on the outside and decided to pull to the infield. He cut across in front of me and I couldn’t see him enough to get stopped and got turned over.”
Carney took the weekend in stride.
“It’s part of it, that’s why we have these spare parts in the trailer,” Carney commented.
Carney looks to translate the team’s speed into a pair of strong finishes at Lake Ozark Speedway this weekend.
