NASCAR Saturday Night Recap June 22, 2019

The Everett’s Auto Parts Late Models continue to thrill.

After Mark Jenison and Tommy Adams went side-by-side in the June 15 main event, I wasn’t sure anything was going to follow that up. But I was wrong! Paul Newcomb started up at the front of the field, and wasn’t going to be denied in his quest to pick up his first career Late Model win. But he didn’t have an easy path to victory.

Dan Johnson reached the back bumper of the No. 7 Newcomb Tree Service machine in the final laps, and the two made a little bit of contact while they raced side-by-side for the top spot. It wasn’t long before Newcomb was crossing Johnson over, cutting to the inside and door slamming with him around the final turns. Newcomb was the victor in the end, while Johnson had to settle for second. Bobby Tripp continued a streak of success with a third-place effort.

In the Seekonk Sport Trucks, round two of the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown Series went to the Murray family. Richie Murray, the son of former Pro Stock competitor Rob Murray, is a rookie contender this year, but you wouldn’t know it. He methodically worked his way to the front, and was on the bumper of leader Ed Perry at the halfway point. It wasn’t long before Murray slid to the outside lane, mashed then throttle and took the point of the race. From there, he didn’t look back. Murray’s success started last year in the Sport 4 division, where he picked up two wins. Now, he is a NASCAR Saturday winner.

Dave Darling continued his dominance in the Pro Stocks…. Oh, wait! Not this week.

Darling has been on his game all year, but this time, it was Mike Brightman who was back in Everett’s Auto Parts Victory Lane. After a multiple year hiatus, Brightman placed the No. 27 at the front of the field for the entire feature and wasn’t going to be denied in his own quest for victory. Brightman and his crew have worked hard trying to get the car back in prime form, and it appears that they have found the right combination. Rick Martin was second, while Kevin Casper finished third.

The Helger’s Southcoast Power Equipment Sportsman feature was pure domination from Corey Fanning. He started third, and was in the lead quickly. A few late restarts didn’t slow him down on his quest to capture his first win of the year. Scott Bruneau, a former champion, captured an emotional second-place finish. Our thoughts are with the Bruneau family during a tough time, as his father, George, passed away last week. Keep them in your mind as they mourn the loss of a true race fan.
