Land of Legends Raceway Loses First Show of Season to Mother Nature

Full card of open-wheel & full-fender action headlines July 18 ‘Saturday Spectacular’

Canandaigua, NY – July 11, 2020 – The coronavirus knocked out the first half-dozen shows at Land Of Legends Raceway beginning in April, but not until July 11 did weather force track promoter Paul Cole to pull the plug on his ‘Saturday Spectacular’ for the first time this season.

With potentially heavy rains forecast in the region throughout the afternoon and evening, the Ontario County Fairgrounds oval fell victim to Mother Nature in the first weather-related cancellation of 2020.

An early morning decision was made to not only allow speedway staff, fans, and race teams the opportunity to make alternative plans but avoid any unnecessary damage to equipment.

The first ‘Saturday Spectacular’ of the month now rolls off July 18 with LOLR slated to host the long-awaited 2020 SuperGen Products with Champion Power Equipment CRSA Sprint Car Series opener. Pepsi Big-Block Modified, Speed Connection Sportsman, Street Stock, and Hobby Stock action completes the five-star card with the first qualifying event on Geneva Club Beverage Night going green at 7pm. Pit gates unlock at 4:00 and grandstand seating opens at 5 p.m.

In quest of the coveted Canandaigua crown, first-time track regular Larry Wight tops the current Big-Block point standings scoring four wins in six main events. Justin Haers also has his sights set on the elusive title with Tim Fuller and Erick Rudolph (1 win) chasing in his tire tracks.

Two-time winner Zach Sobotka heads the Sportsman championship hunt with the front-five drivers separated by just 13 points. Zach Payne, Garrison Krentz, Matt Guererri (3 wins) and Kane Bristol are the closest pursuers while reigning points king Kevin Root (2 wins) ranks ninth in the highly competitive class.

The Mike Emhof Motorsports 305 Sprints are paced by leader Brandyn Griffin (1 win) and Alysha Bay (2 wins), each also looking for their first titles in wine country. Multi-time points champ Darryl Ruggles has one win yet missed an event to stand seventh on the points chart.

Only six markers stand between the top-three Street Stock point chasers with Josh Pangrazio (222), Mike Welch (218), and Jimmy Grant (216) the lone winners after four full-fender events. The companion Hobby Stock division is led by second-generation standout Tyler Burnell, Shawn Lloyd, Brian Lloyd and Casey Wagner, with all but Shawn Lloyd already reaching victory lane.

UPCOMING AGENDA

Originally scheduled for July 2 as part of the extended Independence Day race weekend, the Super DIRTcar Series event remains rescheduled for Wed. July 22. A star-studded line-up is once again expected to converge on the fast Canandaigua half-miler as the mighty Big-Block Modifieds contest for bragging rights in the headline ‘Liberty 100.’ A secondary division will be determined in the days ahead.

There will be no racing on July 25 in lieu of the originally scheduled Ontario County Fair as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced officials statewide to cancel their annual outdoor agricultural events. Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced that the great New York State Fair in Syracuse has been cancelled for this summer and followed up on Wednesday stating that all county fairs across the entire state are cancelled until further notice out of an abundance of caution.

The 177th Ontario County Fair is now scheduled for July 27-31, 2021, as per current Fair Board President Casey Kunes.

Despite the setback, Land Of Legends continues to support fair activities and on Saturday the Ontario County Fair Society will be the beneficiary of the weekly 50/50 raffle drawing. While the Ontario County Fair Society conducts business independent from Ontario County —does not receive funding from the county— without the society there is no LOLR. For more information, please access https://ontariocountyfair.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/OntarioCountyFair/.

Social distancing continues to be everyone’s obligation throughout the fairgrounds facility and facial coverage is required when that can not be achieved. For those unable to be in attendance, LIVE video coverage will be provided for each scheduled race date and can be viewed on Land of Legends TV for $15.
