Coby Takes Control Late for White Mountain Showdown Win

Hill Earns First Career Late Model Victory

N. Woodstock, NH — Milford, CT’s Doug Coby began his drive for a seventh NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship in earnest by capturing the White Mountain Showdown 200 at North Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday, August 1. Coby dove underneath polesitter Jon McKennedy to get the lead on the 135th circuit and then held on through a late restart to pick up his 30th career NASCAR Modified victory and first as an owner-driver.

Coby took the green flag fifth on the 28-car starting grid and was content to maintain his position early as McKennedy and outside polesitter Chris Pasteryak duked it out at the front. McKennedy was able to keep the top spot through a trio of cautions for single-car spins spread over the first half of the race. When the field went back to full song on lap 94 following the third yellow, Coby ducked underneath Lisbon, CT’s Pasteryak for the second spot.

Two more quick cautions followed, which included a red flag on lap 111 when Ontario, NY’s Tommy Catalano pounded the frontstretch wall. Although McKennedy easily cleared Coby on both restarts, the six-time champion continued sizing him up. After feinting a look high in turns three and four on the 134th lap, Coby dove to the inside entering turn one and was able to get the holeshot. The duo briefly touched nerf bars before Coby surged ahead to the top spot.

Coby and McKennedy then pulled away from the field as Pasteryak, Ron Silk, Kyle Bonsignore, and others went back-and-forth behind them. When Rob Summers spun in turn one to bring out the sixth caution with 23 laps to go, it bunched the field back up for a shootout.

After the green lights came on again, Coby darted away while McKennedy and Pasteryak went to war for the runner-up spot. Coming into turn one on the 188th circuit, though, Pasteryak bobbled slightly on the inside and collided with McKennedy. Silk, Bonsignore, and Dave Sapienza also got a piece of the accident, which brought out a yellow flag followed by a red flag to sort out the running order.

McKennedy was able to keep his car straight and maintain the second position for the restart. However, the damage clearly affected the handling as both Bonsignore and Matt Swanson got around him on the restart. Bonsignore then set his sights on Coby but came up a few laps short as Coby took the checkered flag in the series’ second visit to White Mountain.

Bonsignore finished second after starting the event 18th. Swanson dodged the lap-188 incident to come home third. McKennedy held off point leader Justin Bonsignore, who had made a comeback after struggling with handling problems in the first half of the event, to come home fourth. Calvin Carroll, Sapienza, Anthony Nocella, Eric Goodale, and Silk rounded out the top-10.

In weekly racing action, Waterford, VT’s Anthony Hill had the biggest smile of them all after taking his first career Foley Oil & Propane Late Model win. The 2019 7-Eleven Dwarf Car Champion and top Late Model rookie started sixth in the 50-lap feature and was running second to veteran Jeff Marshall of Gilman, VT when the second yellow of the race came out on lap 20 when Allie Menard blew a tire.

As is often the case in the Late Model class, the leader Marshall chose the outside for the restart. However, Hill made the inside line work, pulling ahead of Marshall for the lead. Hill, Marshall, and Craftsbury Common, VT’s Joel Hodgdon waged a three-way battle at the front for the rest of the event with the trio never more than a couple car lengths apart. Marshall challenged Hill multiple times, but both driver and car passed the test to put Hill in Victory Lane.

Marshall settled for second while Hodgdon added to his growing 2020 trophy collection with a third-place finish. Mike Bailey, Quinny Welch, Trent Goodrow, Jon Savage, Stephen Donahue, Oren Remick, and Stacy Cahoon completed the top-10.

Barton, VT’s Shane Sicard continued his winning ways in the Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tigers with his fourth victory of the season. Sicard started seventh in the 40-lap feature and inherited the second spot when Laci Potter spun coming off turn four coming to complete the 21st circuit.

Sicard lined up alongside Glover, VT’s Kaleb Rogers for the restart with the leader Rogers selecting the inside groove. Although Rogers was able to hold the lead on the low lane, another quick caution came out two laps later for Amanda Wheeler’s spin. Rogers again picked the inside, but this time, Sicard drove around him on the high side. The veteran then pulled away for the win.

Rogers took second while Whitefield, NH’s Ben Belanger got around Mike Clark late in the going for third place. Waterbury Center, VT’s Jason Woodard, in a car he’d purchased from Donahue Motorsports earlier in the day, drove his new ride to fifth at the checkered flag. Jaden Perry, Matthew Potter, Ryan Ware, Kasey Beattie, and Jody Sicard also earned top-10 finishes.

St. Johnsbury, VT’s Colby Bourgeois went back-to-back in the 7-Eleven Dwarf Cars for his third win of the season and second point-counting victory. Bourgeois came from sixth on the starting grid to swipe the lead from teammate Dave Gyger on lap 11 of the 25-lap feature.

A caution immediately flew when Tommy Smithers grabbed a piece of the frontstretch wall. Bourgeois easily held the lead on the restart while “Downtown” Bobby Brown and point leader Jason Wyman moved into second and third. After a brief challenge to Bourgeois, the duo spent the rest of the race disputing the second spot, allowing the youngster to carry the checkered flag.

Lincoln, NH’s Brown held off Easton, NH’s Wyman for second. Gyger and Jeff Ainsworth completed the top-five.
