Road Warriors Up for the Challenge at NCFCU Night – YankeeRacer.com

Road Warriors Up for the Challenge at NCFCU Night

Barre, VT — One of the most fun divisions at Thunder Road gets the star treatment it deserves this Thursday, August 13 on NorthCountry Federal Credit Union Night. The second annual Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warrior Challenge will feature 50 laps of thrills and spills for Thunder Road’s entry-level class that offers guaranteed entertainment every time out.

The largest field of the season is expected to battle it out for the $500 top prize — which, for some of the drivers, would almost pay for their car. Racers such as cousins Brian and Frank Putney, Sean “Chubby Rambo” McCarthy, Josh Vilbrin, Justin Prescott, and Dan Garrett already give it their all at every event and will step up their game as the featured class for one night.

Ever since the Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warrior division returned in mid-2017, it has been a place where everyone who shows up has a great time regardless of where they finish. This year, though, the Warriors have truly blossomed. By request, they were upgraded to racing nearly every week, doubling the amount of action without losing any of the fun.

Multiple features have been decided on the final lap and new drivers have showed up on almost a weekly basis. The Warriors even went on the road to New Hampshire’s White Mountain Motorsports Park this past Sunday, bringing a strong field and again going down to the wire to determine the winner.

Now, for the second year in a row, the Road Warriors get 50 laps to show what they can do. They’ll receive driver intros as the headline division of the night plus some of the biggest trophies they’ve ever seen.

NorthCountry Federal Credit Union Night also features a full card for the Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, and Allen Lumber Street Stocks. The Late Model battle for “King of the Road” gets tighter every week. Defending “King of the Road” Jason Corliss of Barre has pulled with eight points of Wolcott’s Marcel J. Gravel.

Shelburne’s Trampas Demers, Milton’s Scott Dragon, and Hinesburg’s Bobby Therrien sit third through fifth and are all one great night away from being in the thick of the title hunt. With just five point-counting events left, though, they are running out of chances to make their move.

Two Flying Tiger heavyweights are set to duke it out for their track championship. Three-time and defending champion Jason Woodard of Waterbury Center has a nine-point lead over 2017 Triple Crown Series champion Mike Martin of Craftsbury Common. Martin became the first repeat winner of the year last week and is on a roll.

Cameron Ouellette, Brandon Lanphear, Derrick Calkins, and Logan Powers are also withing shouting distance of the top spot. In a division that has averaged 30 cars per week, big swings can happen in just one night.

E. Thetford’s Brandon Gray has made the Street Stocks his personal playground in 2020. He holds an 87-point lead over two-time champion Jamie Davis and just needs to avoid disaster down the stretch. The on-track action has remained exciting, though, with contenders such as Tanner Woodard, Kaiden “Tropical Storm” Fisher, and Tim Hunt battling it out every week.

NorthCountry Federal Credit Union Night goes to post at 7:00pm this Thursday, August 13. The second annual Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors go 50 laps with $500-to-win in the second annual Road Warrior Challenge. They’re joined by the Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, and Allen Lumber Street Stocks.

Admission is $15 for adults and $3 for kids ages 12 and under with limited fan attendance.
