Seekonk Speedway Hosts Event that Donates Food, Essentials to Seekonk Families
Price Rite Marketplace, Feed the Children, Angels’ Care Closet Provide Service to Hundreds
SEEKONK, Mass. — Price Rite Marketplace and Feed The Children, together with Angels Care Closet, donated food and essentials to hundreds of Seekonk, Massachusetts families on Wednesday morning in an event held at Seekonk Speedway. The third-mile facility used the front parking lot to welcome families from across the town. Racing remains halted at Seekonk as part of the 75th-anniversary celebration, due to current regulations in place by the State of Massachusetts due to COVID-19.
At the event, all parties provided food and essentials in order to help the burden that the COVID-19 pandemic has put on multiple families. Each family in attendance was given a 25-pound box of food, 15-pound box of essentials including shampoo, conditioner, lotion and personal care items, shelf-stable items and two backpacks filled with school supplies. All families that attended had been pre-identified based on their need at home by Angels Care Closet.
“Community leaders, local family businesses, Price Rite vendors… that’s what it is all about,” Jim Dorey, President of Price Rite Marketplace, said. “We’ve been doing this event for many years. Our Price Rite team has been asking how we could do more of the events and since the first year, we have been doing eight to 10 each year. We have given out over 10 million pounds of food. Everyone that is here today understands and I appreciate the community that wants to take care of each other.”
There were multiple trucks on-site including Feed The Children semi-trucks filled with food and essentials, along with volunteers on-site serving and assisting members of the Seekonk community. There were multiple members of the State of Massachusetts government, and multiple from Seekonk Speedway in attendance, including track owner Francis Venditti.
“Thank you for what you’re doing,” Paul Feeney, Massachusetts State Senator, said, to a crowd of more than 20 volunteers gathered to aid the process. “I’m blessed to represent the town of Seekonk and this region in the Massachusetts State Senate. We are in unprecedented times, and everywhere I am going across the district, there are people stepping up. I have to thank everyone here so much for stepping up. The volunteers, Price Rite, Feed Children, and Seekonk Speedway… even in these times where there are challengers… there are people here that care.”
Per a release from Price Rite, fighting hunger is at the heart of Price Rite Marketplace’s charitable giving, and is paired with Feed the Children’s vision to create a world where no child goes to bed hungry. Millions of children go to bed hungry each night in the United States. On a community level, all of these partners have come together to help families in the local area of Seekonk.
“Organizations like these make these things possible, and it wouldn’t be possible without all of the help here,” Steve Howitt, from the Massachusetts House of Representatives, said. “Today we are here at Seekonk Speedway, where there are many (race) events that happen. I would especially like to thank the Venditti family for their support and having us here today. I was in Price Rite just the other day, and it was clean, and there were shelves that were fully stocked.”
Seekonk Speedway will release further guidance about the 2020 race season as soon as more concrete details are available.
