Seekonk iRacing Road Trip Tour to Crown Champion at Myrtle Beach
SEEKONK, Mass. — After seven races across seven months, Seekonk Speedway will crown the 2020 iRacing Road Trip Tour virtual champion on Thursday, October 22 at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Former real-life Seekonk Late Model champion Ryan Kuhn leads Ryan Doucette by 30 points entering the finale — meaning a finish of 16th or better — no matter what Doucette does — would clinch him the title.
Kuhn’s Road Trip Tour has been nearly perfect. In the middle of the season, he picked up four straight wins, and has finished inside the top-five in all but one race — the last one at Oxford Plains Speedway — where he was running inside the top-five on the final lap until contact took him out of contention for it. Doucette, who has yet to earn a win, has been top-five in all but one race himself to give him a shot at the crown.
The Spooktacular 150 presented by Helger’s Southcoast Power Equipment will wrap the season at Myrtle Beach, a track that will not run anymore races in real-life after a recent sale and destruction of grandstands. “Our iRacing Road Trip Tour has been a chance for all of our competitors and fans to get together and watch some racing during a tough season because of the pandemic,” Kyle Souza, Seekonk Speedway iRacing Coordinator, said. “We can’t thank all of our sponsors enough for supporting our virtual drivers with some great payouts all year.”
That sponsorship — which is $300 per event for a primary sponsor — sees $200 in payouts to the top-five at the end of the race — and $100 towards a season-ending point fund. Following the finale at Myrtle Beach, the top 24 in points will be eligible for prize money, including $250 to the win the championship, $150 for second and $125 for third. From 13th to 24th in the championship standings, each driver will earn a $25 gift card to Seekonk Speedway for use during the 2021 season. The battle for third in the standings is tight — with Brandon Wilkinson leading Thomas Axsom by two, Jake Matheson by six and PJ Evans by eight.
Other winners on the Road Trip Tour other than Kuhn include Axsom and Wilkinson — with Wilkinson winning the opener at Lanier back in April — and Axsom scoring two of the recent wins at Oxford and South Boston. Names like defending Seekonk real-life Sport Truck champion Richie Murray, Trent Goodrow, Chase Belcher, Reese Bogue, Nick Wood, Brad Sousa, Tom Scully III, Mason Tessier and more have been frontrunners as part of the series.
