Stergios Conquers NEMA Lites Field at Star Speedway
This past Saturday, the Northeastern Midget Association Lites teams rolled into Bobby Webber’s Star Speedway with eighteen teams on hand.
In the heat races, Ben Mikitarian took down the win in the first heat. In the second heat Avery Stoehr took down the win.
When the cars rolled out for the feature, Ben Mikitarian in the Triple M/NAPA Auto Parts blasted out into the lead. Tiana Kibbe settled into second in one of her best runs to date after last year’s rookie season. Behind them, Richie Coy was running solidly in third.
On Lap eight, PJ Stergios started making his charge to the front. Stergios had moved into third on the fourth lap, and moved into second on lap eight. At this point, MIkitarian had stretched out his lead.
Stergios began clicking off super quick laps at 12.6-second circuit, to MIkitarian’s 12.8 on lap eleven. Stergios began to close the gap running consistent laps in the high 12-second bracket, as Mikitarian remained strong up front.
As the laps wound down and lapped traffic began to play a part, Stergios would close the gap on Mikitarian. With one lap to go, Stergios would make his bid for the lead, and took command taking down his first win of the season in a heartbreaker for Mikitarian.
Jake Trainor in the Seymour 29 was third, followed by Coy, Dan Cugini, Jim Santa Maria, Randy Cabral, Avery Stoehr, Kyle Valeri, and Chris Vose.
“I had luck on my side with lapped traffic. The car was working really well on the outside lane, and I was able to get through a lot quicker than Ben. Thanks to the Webber family for having us and continuing to improve the Star facility every year. We love coming here,” said Stergios.
The NEMA and NEMA Lites have their first joint kickoff at LEE USA Speedway this coming weekend.
