Dillard Does It: Caleb Dillard Third STSS Cajun Region Winner Saturday at Chatham
CHATHAM, LA – Three-for-three.
On Saturday night at Chatham Speedway, Caleb Dillard became the third different winner in as many Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Cajun Region Modified events, picking up his first of the season.
Dillard earned $1,075 ($1,000 from the posted purse, $75 from APE Racing Engines) for his efforts in the 20-lap main at Jerry Hobson’s facility, taking the Sunoco checkered flag in Race No. 3 of the Day Motor Sports (Tyler, Texas) point series.
Dillard, of Robeline, La., had a pair of top-three finishes entering Saturday’s event but was looking for his first victory in his Tim Bates-fielded No. 18, a former Matt Sheppard-driven Bicknell mount.
This time, he got it done.
Dillard started third and worked beneath early leader David Forbis on the third tour of the wide and racy Chatham oval. Dillard would never turn over the lead once out front.
The battle for second, however, thrilled the crowd.
Forbis and Cody Robbins – the winner at Chatham in the April series opener – fought tooth-and-nail for the position side-by-side over the race’s second half.
Robbins took second on lap 17 but Forbis crossed to the inside and reclaimed the position.
Forbis, of Bossier City, La., narrowly bested Mansfield, La.’s Robbins to the line for second, with Robbins in third with Greg Dillard (Many, La.) and Tommy Rascoe (Converse, La.) completing the front five.
Heat winners were Greg Dillard and Rascoe.
Next up for the series is the first visit of 2021 to Sabine Motor Speedway in Many, La., on Friday, June 11. The month of June concludes at Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., Saturday, June 26.
